Traffic Safety Quiz
Editor's Nole: Another In series
of quizzes to test your driving
cbility.
Are you one of those guys who
tays, "A couple of drinks don't
bother my driving a bit?" Well,
let's see just exactly how much
you actually do know about drink
ing and driving.
1. Strong black coffee will offset
most of the effects of alcohol.
True or false?
2. Just two drinks may reduce
your visual "sharpness" greatly.
True of false?
3. People who take two or three
drinks (social drinkers) and then
drive a car are a bigger prob
lem than out-and-out drunk drivers.
True or false?
4. During the Christmas holi
days, about one out of four drivers
involved in a fatal auto accident
has had something to drink.
True or false?
5. About one out of five adult
pedestrians killed has been drink
ing. True or false?
Answers:
1. False. Coffee or other stimu
lants, the National Safety Council
says, will not offset the effects
of alcohol. "Only time," it says,
"can eliminate alcohol from the
blood stream."
2. True. According to the Amer
ican Medical Association, two cock
tails may reduce your visual acu
ity as much as if you were wear
ing dark glasses at night. "Ima
gine," the council says, "trying to
drive at night wearing dark glass
es.
3. True. "As a group, social
drinkers can be a greater
problem than obvious drunks," the
council says. Why? "There are
more social drinkers and they're
harder to detect. When a drunk
gets behind the wheel of a car, he
usually attracts attention because
his actions are so pronounced oth
ers notice his impairment. The so
cial drinker, however, usually is
able to escape detection until an
emergency gets him into trouble.
4. raise. Not one out of lour
iloser to one out of two, accord
ing to the council. This is almost
twice as high as the annual aver
age.
5. True. The exact percentage in
recent years has been about 22.
And during the Christmas, 1937,
holiday period, a council study
shows, more pedestrians were
killed in the first hour than in
any other hour during the period.
mere are a lot of misconcep
tions concerning drinking and driv
ing, the council says. Smart
drivers know you don't have to be
drunk to be dangerous.
