SUNDAY, APRIL 12, 1959 HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON PAGE 3 B Rookies Could Make Difference For Nats ORLANDO, Fla. (UPD-Whati ean you say about the Washing ton Senators after you say you're lorry? They are the sorriest excuse for major league club around and no one know j it better than their manager. Cookie Lavagetto. How ever, with a straight face he says he hopes the club will win 70 games this year which still would probably leave them in the cellar. . That would be nine more vic tories than they scored in 1958 when for the third time in the last four years they finished eighth. "I'm hopeful we'll win more this year because our kids have bad another year's experience, and if they live up to their po tential, we should be better," La Tagetto sairf. He singled out rookie outfielder Bob Allison, infielder Reno Ber toia and third baseman Harmon Killebrew as "three players who jiuid make a difference." Beavers Win Two From PU CORVALLIS (AP)-The unde feated Oregon State College base ball team ran its string of con secutive victories to 13 by sweep ing a doubleheader from the Uni versity of Portland Saturday. Oregon State had to go 13 in rings to win the first one, 3-2, but took the second contest, 4-2, in the regulation college seven in nings. ' A double by Larry Baker scored Kim Bradshaw, who had walked, to decide the opening contest. It broke up a tight pitching duel be tween Portland's lefthander. Bill Love, who allowed only eight hits, and Gary Moore, who scattered 11 Portland blows. Oregon State got all the runs It needed for the second game in the first inning. The" - Beavers scored three times on singles by Van i,uby- and Jerry Droscher, a walk to Grimm Mason, a wild pitch and a two-run single by Baker. Wally Panel drove out a home run with one man on base to ac count for Portland's runs. Luby had three hits in four tunes at bat. Ray Lunde pitched the distance (or Oregon State, allowing only lour hits. The first game victory was the third of the season for Moore, whose wife gave birth to a baby Friday night. Art Wall Leads Golf Money Race DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP)-With the $15,000 he pocketed for winning the Masters Tournament; Art Wall Jr has taken a huge lead in the PGA mony derby. The Masters' prize more than doubled Wall's, earnings for the year, bringing his total to $29,830. That's nearly as much as the total earnings of Gene Littler. Arnold Palmer and Cary Middlecoff, who are second, third and fourth, re spectively, in the winnings depart ment. : Littler, of San Diego, Calif., has won $12,163. Palmer, of Ligonier, Pa- last year's leading money winner, has collected $9,809. Mid dlecoff, of Hollywood, Fla., has picked up $9,500 while playing in opjfy two lovrnamenis. . . Sixth Allison hit .307 at Chattanooga last year with only nine homers but had 93 runs batted in. La vagetto plans to play him in left field if he uses Washington's hit ting star, Roy Sievers. at first. Otherwise, Allison will be in right instead of big Jim Lemon. Little Albie Pearson, tne Amer ican League's 1938 Rookie-of-the-Year, will be In center. Lavagetto would like to keep Sievers in left field, but he isn't sure that Norm Zauchin can make it at first base. Zauchin hit only .228 last year, but will get a shot at the job again. The only first baseman available is Julio Bee quer, who was used mainly in pinch hitting roles. Bertoia, obtained from Detroit, will play second if Killebrew, one of the three bonus players in Washington's history, can make it at third. Otherwise, Bertoia will take over third with Herb Plews, who held down the position last year but hit only .258, at second. DESPERATE FOR SHORTSTOP Ken Aspromote, a disappoint ment last season after the Sena tors acquired him from the Bos ton Red Sox, and Bob Malkmus, whom Lavagetto was so high on last spring, are otner second case candidates. Malkmus hit a lowly ,186. ' The Senators are in desperate need of a shortstop. All they have now is Ron Samford, who may not be ready by opening day because of arm trouble, and Jose Valdi- vielso. Samford hit .301 at Charles ton, Valdivielso .308 at Phoenix and later in the year .222 at Min neapolis. Clint Courtney, who rated as the No. 1 catcher, broke a bone his right leg, is expected to be ready for the season's opening game. Ed Fitzgerald, J. W. Port er, who also can play first base or the outfield, and Steve Kor check are reserve receivers. Their 1958 batting averages were: Fitz gerald .263: Porter .200 witn Cleveland, and Korcheck only .078 with Washington. WEAK IN PITCHING Lavagetto has two ace starting pitchers in Camilio Fascual (8-12 and Pedro Ramos (14-18) and ! fine reliever in Dick Hyde (10-3). But all three have been men tioned in trade talk. As other possible starters La vagetto lists, in order, Truman Clevenger (9-91, Chuck btobbs (3-9) (overall with the Senators and Cardinals last year). R u s s Kemmerer (6-15;, Vito Valentinet ti (5-6) (with Detroit and Washing ton) and B 1 11 Fischer (4-10) (with the White Sox, Tigers and Sena tors). If not needed as a starter, Clevenger will be in the bullpen with Hyde. Another relief possi bility is southpaw John Kralick, who spent most of last season in semi-pro ball. ' It doesn't add up to much pitch ing, or anything else for the Sena tors. Time Out "I like these early spring games . . , Notice how their jaw muscles are still weak and flabby from the winter layoff?" in Klamath Fall ?& anrl $JjdluL& By SAMMY SORETH4JMB There was some very nice bowl ing the past couple of weeks. Probably one of the most out standing performances was the ter rific 661 series rolled by Aud rey Herrick in the Moose Ma's League, a new high for the 1958- 1959 season. Also the beautiful 257 game bowled by Mary Bothwell in the Lady Bug League is also a new high for the season. Mel Rob inson of the Klamath Tractor Team bowled a nice 685 series in league play while trying hard for another 700 scries. Mel returned a few nights later and, bowling in a match doubles set with Jack Sol- berg, rolled a 705 series. Eldon Kaylor, bowling witn the Interstate Pump team, turned in games of 216, 208 and 202 for a 626 series. Ralph Barnett, bowling with Lewis Chevron team, also had beautiful series of 212, 197 and 225 for a 634. Merle Smith with the Landry In surance team had a nice zoo game and a 613 series. Bob Vic torin had games of 211, 177 and 226 for a 615 series while holding an average of 201 plus, the highest in Klamath Fails league play. Here's one for the books. Floyd Wynne, bowling with the Herald and News team, had 10 striKes in one game but it only added up to a 218. Someone moved the lowi line, no doubt, because the ball was a beauty right in the pocket. That sort of thing really upsets one, but Floyd came back with three in a row to end tne game. A bit of National News. I-rank Baker, secretary of the American Bowling Congress, anticipates new high on sanctioned league teams well in excess of 625,000. The previous high was 591,933 teams for the 1957-1958 season. Atoll Victor At New York NEW YORK (AP)-The Elkcam Stable's Atoll outfought the Brook- field Farm s Intentionally in a tor rid duel Saturday and won the $28,600 Gotham Stakes m the fast est time ever hung up for the event for 3-year-olds. Eddie Arcaro rode Atoll, while Willie Shoemaker was aboard In tentionally, setting up a duel be tween two of the nation's top jock eys. Both colts are hot contenders for the $75,000-added Wood Memo rial here next Saturday, the final Eastern test for the May 2 Ken tucky Derby at Churchill Downs. Seven 3-year-olds started in the mile and one-sixteenth race. Atoll, a brown son of Flushing II-Coral Island, was clocked in 1 minute, 43 seconds. The fastest previous time in the Gotham was 1:44 by Laffango in 1953. Atoll beat Intentionally by three- quarters of a length. It was five more lengths back to Open View, a stablemate of Atoll. Atoll paid $4.90, $2.10 and $2.10. Finsterwald Tops Carolina Open GREENSBORO, N.C. (AF) Dow Finsterwald, who has won only one tournament since becom ing National PGA champion last summer, shook up the Greensboro Open golf field Saturday with a 65 that gavethim a 54-hole total of 201 and a 4-stroke ler.d. The 29-year-old Athens, Ohio, native who plays out of Tequesta, Fla., was 6 under par Saturday with a 33-32 performance. It car ried him from a three-way second place tie into a commanding lead going into Sunday's final round of the $15,000 tournament. Mike Fetchick of Yonkers, N.Y., the leader through the first two rounds, slid a stroke over par with a 72 to drop into second place with 205. Masters champion Art Wall Jr. of Focono Manor, Fa., posted a 70 for 206 and third place. Tied for fourth, six shots behind Finsterwald at- 207, were Tony Lema, San Leandro, Calif., and Canadian Stan Leonard. Mickey Vernon Goes To Braves CLEVELAND (API First base man Mickey Vernon was traded to the Milwaukee Braves Saturday for pitcher Humberto Robinson, the Cleveland Indians announced. It was a straight player swap with no cash involved. Robinson, a 28-year-old right hander, had a 2-4 record with the Braves last season. The 46-year-old Vernon, who also has played at Washington and Boston, was in his 19th season in the American League. He batted .293 last season in 119 games. Webf eet Down Raiders Twice EUGENE (AP)-Good pitching helped the University of Oregon baseball team to a doubleheader victory over Southern Oregon here Saturday. 5-1 and 7-6. Oregon hurlers allowed only 10 hits all day, nine of them singles. In the opener, Fred Ballard of Oregon struck out eight men and allowed only three hits. Walt Barenski's home mn with two aboard in the- 3rd inning helped Oregon's cause along in the second contest. First game: Soulhern Oregon . 000 000 t 1 3 2 Oregon 102 101 X 5 8 0 D'Olivo, Steelman (4), McAbee; Ballard and Olson. Second game: Southern Oregon 01S 000 06 R 4 Oregon 043 000 x 7 4 3 Vannit. Dannie, McLemore '2) Walter S and McAbee; Todd, Ur hammer 3i. Loy (4). Springer (71 end McLain, wait (5). This total would boost our individ ual membership to approximately 300 million bowlers. Klamath Falls has also set a new record when they gained from 82 teams for 1957-1958 season lo 114 teams and in individual membership from 452 to a new high of- 541 for the 1958-1959 sea- son. Thanks to the 10 new Bruns- wick Alleys at Lucky Lanes. I'm sure this record will be short lived, however as new bowlers show up every day.
