We could browse as long as we wished; the salesladies, if asked, would discuss any article, even pointing out its weaknesses. The advertisements and salescards were all of a "soft-sell" kind. We still laugh over the neat card in a window of a large department store which announced what we Americans would call a "bargain day" or a "moment of madness." Instead, with customary British restraint, it quietly announced, "Rather Special Day." The member sits for nothing, but is given credit for the total number of hours she donates. Then when this mother needs a sitter, she calls someone else, and so on. It operates on the honor system, of course, since each mother is expected to contribute an equal amount of time. This way no one pays anything, yet each is assured of a dependable sitter.
