This weekend will see the open ing of the annual Camp Fire Girl candy sale when girls will sell minis over a one or two-eek period Mrs. Wayne Nichaus is chairman of the money earning event. April 7 is leaders conference day which will he held at Peace Memorial Church in Klairalh SAI.KM lAF'i State Labor Commissioner Norman Nilsen said Tuesday night that reducing the compulsory school attendance age trom 18 to lb would be a mist.we that would be hard to remedy. Nilsen told the House and Sen ate Education committees that much would be lost by dropping troublesome students from school. But Circuit Judge Ralph Hol- man. Oregon City, member of the Interim Committee on Judicial Administration which reeonv nended the change, said many students are damaged by forcing them to stay in school alter 16. He said they hinder the educa tional system, and that Oregon is one of the few states which keep children in school alter Hi. Nilsen said that employers would he reluctant to hire stu dents who quit school betore reaching the age of 18. He said the present school law could be improved, however, .lodge Holman questioned the claim that youngsters who quitL school would find it hard to get work. He said the stales which have the age at lti do not have this problem He reminded the com- mittee that the interim commit tee also recommended that the labor laws he changed lo make it possible for young people to get jobs. He said attendance and educa tion are not the same. Nilsen said students are too im mature to decide when to quit school.
