Dillon is serving with the Air Force in Korea and Mrs. Dillon is staying Castro Asked To Visit PNW HAVANA AP Rep. Charles O. Porter ID-Orel has invited Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Cas tro to visit Oregon if Castro goes to Washinston, DC. in April for an American Society of News Daper Editors meeting. Porter said Monday he told Castro he would be in good com pany because so many Oregon men have grown beards for the observance of Oregon's centennial Porter said Castro left the im rression in a 45-minute convcrsa lion that the prime minister wants to visit the U.S. but fears that his English is inadequate. He said he assured Castro that would be no handicap. Porter said the first question asked him by Castro was: "When are you going to act on sugar?" "I told him." Porter continued. "that we would act in due course and there should be no trouble. The new Castro government has indicated it would like the United States to increase its sugar export quota. Porter was fo return to Wash ington. D.C., Tuesday after a tour of tuba. Probe Asked On Nominee SALEM (AP) An investiga tion of Spraaue Carter, whom Gov. Mark Hatfield nominated as state selective service director, was proposed Monday by Rep. Keith Skelton (D-Eugene. Skelton asked Congressman Charles O. Porter DOre to re quest Gen. Lewis B. Hershey, na tional selective service director, to "make an investigation of Mr. Carter's qualifications before any action is taken." Gen. Hershey makes the actual appointments of state directors. Pointing out that Carter was active in Hatfield's campaign. Skelton wrote to Porter that "se lective service is a system which should be from political appoint ment. If Mr. Hatfield is indeed paying off his political debts by the appointment of Mr. Carter, over the protests of selective ser vice boards, this matter should be brought to the attention of Gen. Hershey." Skelton said the position "has been held for many years by Col. Francis W. Mason and he has. so far as I know, fulfilled his duties of office capably and conscien tiously." Kiinant professor of Enflnth at Oregon Stat College, will go a a two-year leave April 1 to work on a new novel. Malamud is among 11 poets and novelists selected for special cre ative arts grants from the Ford Foundation. A total of 1150.000 is available for the 11 with individual awards depending on the indivi dual needs. Malamud. who said he plans to remain in Corvallis to work on the novel, went to Italy in W.i8 on a Partisan Review fellowship for study abroad. His novel. "The Assistant." won a $1,000 award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters last year. In addition, Malamud's short stories frequently appear in magazines. Downtown 700 Main St. and Town & Country Deer Committee Asked By Solons SALEM 'AP Klamath Coun ty's delegation introduced a bill! In the Senate today to create a seven-member committee to ad vise the Game Commission on establishment and conduct of deer hunting seasons in Klamath and Lake counties. The committee would be ap pointed by the Game Commission. Two members would be stockmen, two would represent sportsmen's organizations, and three would be public members. The members would have to be residents of Klamath and Lake counties, but there could not be more than four members from either of the two counties. A similar measure died In the 1W7 Legislature.
