Australia UPI An overflow crowd of 15.000 persons 5.000 standing in the rain launched American evan gelist Billy Graham's Australian crusade Sunday night. Six-hundred 22 men and women accepted Graham's invitation to dedicate their lives to Christ. It was the most responsive evangeli cal meeting ever held in Mel bourne, and Graham said it was the biggest he had ever encoun tered anywhere. Some 10,000 persons filled West Melbourne Stadium, while 5.000 more stood in a pouring rain to listen to his sermon over loud speakers. The American minister went outside later and delivered an other address to the dripping crowd. "You are wonderful people to iand in this rain," he said. "I'll never forget this scene." Pasternak Pulls A Garbo MOSCOW (UPI) Russian poet author Boris Pasternak, per turbed by the undesirable contro versy stirred abroad by his poem "The Nobel Prize." asked Sunday night to be left alone to concen trate on his work and seek rein statement in the Soviet Writers Union. The 69-year-old Pasternak was ousted from the union because of his controversial novel "Dr. Zhi vago," for which he was awarded the 1958 Nobel Prize for Litera ture. Pasternak rejected the award and the $40,000 prize that went with it after coming under heavy fire from his countrymen. Pasternak reiterated his indig nation with a British reporter whom he said betrayed his trust by publishing the poem, interpret ed in the West of indicating Pas trmak's determination to continue his light for freedom of espres sinn. Pasternak said he gave the re- porter the poem te deliver to a friend w Taris, and did not au Um-iae its publication. "1 just want to he left alone and aa my work." Pasternak said Sunday night, with considerable annoyance. (AP)-The Ath ens Fair Grounds has been turned into a camp to accommodate sev eral hundred gypsies who have ap peared here since one of their leaders was wounded. Mike Johnson. 41, described by Sheriff Clyde Ennis as a gypsy crown prince, was reported in fair condition from a bullet wound received during a holdup attempt Wednesday. Deputy C. C. Owens said that about 300 gypsies are living at the fair grounds. He report' i auto li cense plates from the Far West and Midwest as well as many from Alabama, Georgia and Flor ida, He said no arrests have been made in the Johnson shooting. Johnson was shot in the chest when someone sought to rob him at his home. Poison Gas Fatal To 2 TWENTYNINE PALMS. Calif. UPI Two Lo Angeles area men attempting to develop a new rocket fuel died of carbon monox ide Sunday when the poisonous fumet filled a gas-mixing pit they were working in near here. Abe Goldfarb. W. Santa Monica, president of the Yttrium Corp. of America, and Charles L. Castle. 4. Cwnpton, were discovered in the eight-foot pit by another em plove of the firm, James V. Az zarello. 27, El Centre Calif. AzzarelMi said the deadly fumei invaded the pit when a line carry ing carbon monoxide from ground lvel into the pit apparently broke. Six Tracts Readied For March Sale Olson-Ross Lumber Co. of white City was the successful bidder for a tract of 1,872.000 bd. ft. of timber located along the Tiller Trail highway in northern Jack son County which was offered for sale by the Mrdford District of the Bureau of Land Management on February 12. Their bid of 170.655 included an offer of M per thousand bd. ft. for the Douglas-fir, which was the major species in the sale. Eight other operators qualified to par ticipate in the oral auction sale. On March 12, the Mcdford Dis trict of the bureau plans to offer six tracts for sale. These tracts, which vary in size from 15.000 to 5.6M.0OO bd. ft. have a total estimated volume of 12.17S.0OO bd. ft. which is appraised at $261,-545.05. Three of Ihe tracts and 11,9m,- 000 bd. ft. of the volume is locat ed in southern Douglas County, two tracts and 34.000 bd. ft. arc in eastern .Jackson County and one tract containing 176.000 bd. ft. is located m southern Josephine County. UPI Actor Huntz Hall. 38, who played the character "Dippy" In the "Dead End Kids" film series, was mad and belligerent Sunday night when arrested on a drunk driving charge, according to authorities. Highway patrol officers said the veteran film actor was driving his new car in an erratic manner at about 5 to 10 miles an hour along Pacific Coast Highway when they stopped him. Hall was "belligerent and mad at evervbody." reported Deputy Sheriff F. L. Stabler of the sheriff station here where Hall was booked on the misdemeanor charge. "I'll see you in court." the pickle-nosed actor shouted to any one who cared to hear, Stabler said. Hall, whose real name is Henry Richard Hall, made at least 99 low budgeted films in the past 22 years, playing in the "Dead End Kids," "The Eastside Kids" and the "Bowery Boys" motion picture series. He was reported to have made a fortune in the films.
