WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 2R. 1953 HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON PAGE NINE GLAMOR GIRLS rr-i .-V ,JU Senator Asks Access Study Of Federal Hunting Lands Don't worry, Mother. He NEVER misses." A stuff study by the Senate In terior Committee was urged today by Sen. Richard L. Neuberger as step toward opening up for recreational uses "thousands of acres of public land now virtually locked up because it is isolated by private land holdings." Neuberger said that the problem of providing hunters, anglers and campers with access to national tnrests and other put?licly-owned tracts is especially acute in West ern states where a checkerboard pattern of land ownership inter mingles private and federal hold inqs. He asked Sen. James E Murray of Montana, chairman of the Senate Interior Committee, to institute a si. iff review with ap propriate officials in the Depart ments of Interior and Agriculture who administer the federally- owned units, and prepare reconv mennai ons lor remedial ivkimii- lion, if such action is deemed necessary. The Oregon senator said he had received numerous complaints in recent months from hunters and ano1pr uhn had heen barred from crossing private land which sur rounds icderaliy-ownea acreages. In one case, he explained, a pri- vpte owner nao. leviea a iw ui fnr the nrivileee of crossing his land to hunt in a national for est. In his request to Senator Mur ray. Neuberger said that "the De partments of Agriculture and In terior have power of eminent do main to assure ingress and egress on public lands, but there appears to be little evidence of the use of this authority. "Likewise, procedures are avail able for establishing reciprocity right-of-way and road use rights between the federal government and private land owners." he add ed. "Failure of the departments to fully employ these statutory pro visions is resulting in tne locmng up of vast areas of public land dedicated to multiple-use. includ ing hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. Proper access to public lands will open thousands of addi tional acres to recreational uses." Lack of reciprocal access be tween private and public lands ownership exists. also affects the management and harvesting of federally-owned tim ber, he said. It was estimated that about nine billion board-feet of tim ber is involved in Oregon national forests where checkerboard OSBORN HOTEL EUGENE, ORE. n.
