JOHNSTON Vnltrd Press International The day of the dictator seems slowly but surely to he coming to an end in Latin America. Argentina, Colombia and Vene zuela, all of which tossed out dic tators within the past two years are moving gradually under Dem ocralic regimes toward elimina tion of conditions which breed to talitarianism. Now that they have freedom again after years of suppression, the peoples of these countries are not likely to permit any strong man rulers to gain a firm grip on them again. , With the ouster of Cuba's Ful- jencio Batista on icw lears Dav, onlv three dictators remain in Latin America. They are Gen eralissimo Rafael L. Trujillo. who has ruled the Dominican Republic for a quarter of a century: Luis Somoza Jr., who took control of Nicaragua after his father was assassinated in 195K : and Gen Alfredo Stroessner, who assumed power in Paraguay in 1354. In Argentina. Colombia and Yen- zuela, the problems facing the successors to the dictators are mainly economic. In this respect, (he new regimes look to the I'nit-ican policies and the assistance it ed Stales to help them out with increased trade, financial aid and foreign investments. There is some resentment in these countries toward the I'. S. government (or its Latin Ameri- has given the past dictatorships But the ill feeling has not cur tailed the desire for better rela tions with the I'nited States, par ticularly in economic matters. (AP) Mr. and Mrs. William Howard Mosby of Eugene drowned in the Suis- law River Friday after a passing car forced their pickup truck off the highway into the river. The bodies were found when (he truck was raised from the river bottom 10 miles east of this South ern Oregon coastal community. The window on the driver's side was smashed, Indicating that Mosby tried to gel out of the pickup before he drowned. Mosby, 62. was s Eugene well drilling contractor. His wife was 84. The State Patrol said John Lee Craig, 26, of Houston was killed when patrolman Howard Chapman opened fire after Craig shot his own infant son and wounded the officer. Both the hoy, David, 2, and the patrolman were .hit in the shoul der, but neither was hurt seriously. State Patrol Chief Roy Betlach said Chapman found Craig in a jeep parked in the gravel pit after receiving a complaint that an Ocean City, Wash., motel operator had been beaten. The man stepped from the jeep. drew another gun. shot Chapman, then turned and fired at the chil dren, he said. Chapman immedi ately opened fire and killed Craig. The battle followed an alterca tion over a motel bill, Betlach said. He said the patrolman an swered a call for aid from the William Redfield Motel and found Redfield had been beaten with a club. Redfield said he had refused to accept a check offered him by Craig in payment for groceries. He said Craig attacked him with a club after he went to the Tex an's cabin td investigate a com plaint about the plumbing. Craig grabbed his two children and fled the motel in the jeep, Redfield said. Doctors at St. Joseph's Hospi tal here said the hoy was not in i serious condition. He was shot through the shoulder and the slug apparently shattered, a fragment striking the youngster in the head. The girl was turned over to ju venile authorities. Betlach said he believed Craig's wife was In Alas ka, where Craig had been work ing recently in the oil fields. Chapman was released from, the hospital after a .38 slug was re moved from his shoulder. Atlanta Jury Acquits Man ATLANTA (AP) - A balding 35- year-old industrial engineer was acquitted Friday night of dyna miting (he Atlanta Jewish Temple but his defense attorney went to jail for contempt of court. George M. Bright left the court room a free man for the first time in three months when a jury of 12 men acquitted him after delib erating two hours and eight min utes. His attorney, white-haired and portly Reuben Garland, was led to jail to start serving 40 days for contempt as the aftermath of num erous clashes wilh Judge Jeptha Tanksley during the 11-day trial in Superior Court. Bnght's first trial ended in a mistrial last December. The jury then split nine to three for con viction.
