"You never know when an accident will happen a ' blonde hair on your coat, you get home late 1" Alabama Circuit Judge May Hand Over Documents iXLAYTON, Ala. (AP)-Circuit Judge George Wallace, courting a jail term for contempt, was ex pected to hand over voter regis tration records to a second county grand jury today. Agents for the U. S. Civil Rights Commission, ' though armed with 4 court order, probably will meet the same pattern of defiance in adjoining Bullock County today as confronted them here in Barbour County .Monday when Wallace re fused to show the records. Commission agents, arriving for court-ordered appointment to check the records for evidence that Negroes had been discrimi nated against, found Wallace was placing the files in custody of a hurriedly assembled Barbour County grand jury. Another grand jury reportedly was ready to be empanelled in Bullock, although the agents have a; mandate ordering Wallace to open files of both counties. Wallace' left the decision on whether the agents could inspect the records up to the 18 Barbour jnrors. The jurors agreed to let tfje investigators "examine these records jointly with us," but the agents declined the offer. A commission snnkpsman said the agents rejected the proposal because we have no authority to deal with the grand jury. Our au thority is to deal with Judge Wal lace." The 39-ycar-old state jurist, who nrevioilslv had imnnirnrlprl thp rpc. ords in both counties and refused to surrender them to the .federal government, will face a hearing in Monteomerv Werinpsdnv hofnr U. S. Dist. Judge Frank M. John son Jr. Johnson, who set the hearing to see if his order had been obeyed, said he anticipated no action be fore Wednesday. "I want to give Judge Wallace every opportunity to comply with the order of this court," he said. Hatfield Assumes Office In Colorful Ceremony SALEM (AP) Mark Hatfield. 36-year-old Republican, was in augurated as governor Monday in a colorful 90-minute ceremony in the House Chamber in Oregon's capitol Oregon's 29th and youngest gov ernor, Hatfield found reaction to his message mixed. Democratic legislators, who have control of both houses, criticized it, claim ing that Hatfield did not recom mend enough new taxes to sup port his program. He is Ronald Dale Smith, 21. who was captured here Saturday by Sheriff's Deputy Frank Elfer ing and an FBI agent. Smith was arretted on a Kansas warrant charging unlawful flight from the Keno Lounty Jail in . Hutchinson to avoid prosecution for burglary. Smith told officers he had been in this area about a week when he was arrested. He said he boarded a bus at Wichita, and stopped at Salt Lake City before coming here to visit friends. publicans wore vociferous in their praise. The inauguration and organiza tion of both houses went smoothly as clockwork. There had been ears that the inauguration might be delayed by the argument over whether Hatfield or outgoing Gov Robert 1). Holmes should name the secretary of state. But that argument is headed for the state Supreme Court now. The House Chamber was packed for the ceremony, and the crowd ovrrllowed into the corridors Hattietd and Holmes were given hearty ovations as they entered the chamber. Four former governors were there. They were Charles A. Sprague.
