To be in use until early in the new year, ' visitors may view it in operation or see the results, states W. O. Shoemaker of Bend, who is in charge of the machine. The Marden brush cutter has a record of 80 per cent kill on Texas mesquite, according to Shoemaker, who feels the new machine will revolu tionize land clearing. Several sizes are made. He is an armament specialist with the 54th Fighter Intercep tor Squadron, which recent ly broke every record in the Air Defense Command 36 of them during na tionwide competition at Vincent Air Force Base, Ari zona. The 54th, which mans 27 missile-launching, twin let Northrup F89J Scor pions, is stationed at Ells worth Air Force Base, Rap id City, South Dakota. Annual Ball The Church of Je cus Christ of Latter Day Saints nas set Friday, January 23, for ahe annual Green and Gold Ball to be held in the recreatior hall of the church, Home and Martin streets. Theme of this year's ball will be "Winter Wonderland. Guests planning to attend will ask Bishop Wesley tlarn for guest cards. January 10, at 8 p.m. in the Ma- AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP Beverly Lloyd, daughter of Mrs, Elayne Lloyd, 1110 MonClaire Street, has been awarded the Zim merman scholarship for the winter ,md spring terms at the University of Oregon. Beverly is a senior in physical education and will giaduate this spring. She is com pleting her student teaching at South Eugene High School. A 1955 j.aduate of KUHS, Beverly is pres. ioent of the Women's Recreation Association on the campus. COUNCIL MEETS LAKEVIKW One new council man, Ernie Freeman, and one re flected last November, Alvas "Buck" Elliott, were in attendance with Mayor Howard "Mickey" Goodnough and Councilmen Lane Thornton and Ernest Gerber, for ' the first meeting of the council for 1959, held Tuesday evening, January 6. All city policemen were itappointed for the year. These include Frank Anderl, police chief, Lew Jones, Wayne Creek and Dan Stover. Robert L. Welch was again iiamed city , attorney and Ted Gchaer, fire chief. Committee ap pointments will be available at a later date. The contract for gaso line was granted to Richfield and diesel to Standard Oil HONOR STUDENT Roger Lentz. an aeronautical en gineering student at the University of Washington in Seattle, has been named to the honor roll for the tall term. Young Lentz, a sopho more at the university, attended Oregon State College last year where he maintained honor grades hroughout. .He is the son of Mrs. Pearl Lentz, 2215 Orchard street, and is a graduate of Klamath Un ion High School. FIRE ROUTS FAMILIES NEW YORK (UPI) At least 20 families were driven into the street Wednesday night by a two alarm fire which burned through the top two floors of a five-story tenement.
