JANUARY 1. 1959 Floor Leader Candidates Profiled By AP Reporter WASHINGTON (AP) - Racing for the spotlight job as senate floor leader for the Republican party today are: Tall, gaunt John Sherman Coop er, Kentucky mountaineer who has surprised Democrats in that border state by winning election to the Senate three of the five times be tried. Husky and oratorical Everett McKinley Dirkn, Illinois veteran oi local, state and national Repub lican politics, who served 16 years In the House before upsetting the Senate's majority leader, Scott Lucas, 1930. - Cooper is the nominee of a group of self-styled liberals who are convinced that big changes must be made in party leadership and policies after the November Democratic landslide. Oirksen is the choice ol older Republican senators who saw their party's voting strength drop from 47 to 34 seats this year. Dirksen, who will be 63 Jan. 4, battled long and hard to get his party's presidential nomination for the late Sen. Robert A. Taft of Ohio. Then he later became GOP whip in the Senate to help carry out the prosrams and policies of Dwight D. Eisenhower, who beat Taft. Cooper. 57, and sometimes com pared with Abraham Lincoln, had served both Democratic and Re publican administrations at inter national conferences. Each of his Senate elections has been for an unexpired term. Twice he has suc ceeded Democrats who died in of fice after defeating him for a full six-year place, the late Virgil Chapman and Alben Barklcy. Both of the Republican candi dates are veterans, Dirksen of World War I and Cooper of World War II. Both are noted as tireless, handshaking campaigners. Both belong to numerous church, fra ternal and honorary organizations. But their differences also are nu merous. Millions of television viewers will recall the eloquent Dirksen pleading the Taft cause at the 1952 Chicago convention. It was then he pointed his finger at Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York as a leader of defeat. Boos filled the convention hall and Eisenhow er, whom Dewey was supporting, later won. Cooper is far from an orator. His words come slowly, his face flushes, and he often is not heard unless he becomes irritated in the give and take of debate. Then, j speaking louder, he can be heard and understood. The Kentucky senator has not hesitated to differ with the Presi dent and even with his fellow Re publicans. He is a booster for the public power TVA and has voted against several Eisenhower farm proposals. Dirksen. once known as an iso lationist and a caustic critic of New Deal and Fair Deal pro grams, more recently has been the vocal defender of some similar efforts by the Eisenhower administration. YULE TREE PICKUP LAKEVIEW Under the sponsor ship of the Lakcvicw High School student council, there will be a Christmas tree pickup throughout Lakevicw starting at 8 a.m. Satur day, January 3. The students ask that those wishing trees disposed of should place them in parkways to prevent any possibility of miss ing the pickup or having trees taken that are not intended for disposition. The annual pickup is in cooperation with the agriculture department of the high school. The department's truck will be used.
