Then followed nine more years in which the 'Pack never won less than 24 games Those were the days of Dick Dickey, Sam R a n I i n o, Bobby Speight and Ronnie Shavlik. The Wollpack failed to win either the old Southern Conference or At lantic Coast Conlerence title only once during that span and was in the NCAA tournament five limes. But a period ol NCAA probation followed and the 1956-57 season (15-11) and the '57-58 campaign (18-6) were comparatively lean vears without tournament titles Now it is the era of 6-8 John Richter and 5-9 Lou Pucillo, pair of Philadelphia boys who went south to play ball where tne lans love it so much they packed Reynolds Coliseum with a record 73.600 admissions in the last three days of afternoon-night double- headers. Australia (AP) Mai Anderson of Australia signed a professional tennis contract Wednesday night guaranteeing him $11,500 a year for the next two years. Promoter Jack Kramer and Anderson made the announcement simultaneously after the Davis n : - I : . it.- iup uiniier iiuiiuiuiK me united States players who defeated Aus tralia, 3-2 in the challenge round. Kramer said he expects to sign Ashley Cooper', Ihe other member of the Australian Davis Cup tan dem, Saturday to a 3-year con tract calling for a minimum of $100,000. "Cooper was very disappointed at losing to Alex Olmedo in the singles" Kramer said. "He came to us and said he expected we were no longer interested because of his showing. "We told him positively we were still interested. But it made a great impression on us that this boy would have this attitude." There were rumors Wednesday night that Cooper might withdraw from his plans to turn pro in order to make a bid to re-capture the Davis Cup for Australia. But this was found not to be the fact. Cooper defeated Barry MacKay in his opening singles match, but lost to Olmedo' in the match that gave the United States the trophy. Anderson also fell before Olmedo on the opening day, but turned hack MacKay after the United States had clinched the cup. Cooper is to be married Friday to Helen Wood, a former Miss Australia. Kramer is remaining in Brisbane for the wedding and con tract talks. Anderson joins the professional troupe on the basis of 15 per cent of the gate in all matches m which he competes. Cooper, top amateur in the world on his record of winning the Australian, Wimbledon and United States titles, is to get 20 per cent. "Pancho Gonzales, the champ, and Cooper, the new top amateur, are the only ones now getting 20 per cent," Kramer said. "All of Ihe others, including Lew Hoad. Ken Rosewall, Tony Trabert and Pancho Segura, like Anderson get 15." Anderson, 23. Ihe Queensland ace who won thp U.S. champion ship m 1957 and barely lost in the finals last year to Cooper, will make his pro debut in Cairns Fri day against Australian Ken Mc Gregor. BASEBALL The New York Y'ankees roll along like old man river, with De troit coming up on the outside as the last stretch challenger. Over in the losing half of the World Series, Milwaukee's pitching strength will hold off Ihe Pitts burgh Pirates. Ted Williams will bug people's eyes again as he wins the Amen can League batting championship with Ernie Banks knocking it off in the National. Mickey Mantle will make a faltering run at Babe Ruth's 60 homers but the record's safe again. BOXING Floyd Patterson will defend the heavyweight championship of his little world against Tillinghast X. Nobody, the Oxford-educated son of a female blacksmith who plays the ukelele. Then the box ing commissions will crack down and he'll have to box one of the three leading challengers. This one he'll also win by a knockout. Archie Moore will defend his light heavy title once more and finally retire at the age of 97, or thereabouts. Carmen Basilio will regain the middleweight title from Ray Robinson and there will be at least three new welter weight champions. GOLF Ken Venturi finally will win the Masters with all the shooting and shouting being over before it gets on television. Billy Casper's put ting will win the U.S. Open at Winged Foot ,ana Dow Finster wald will retain the PGA crown. (Fearless Fraley still won't be able to sink a three-foot putt.) HORSE RACING First Landing and Tomy Lee will be the three-year-olds with all the publicity but Tudor Melo dy will win the Kentucky Derby and become the first foreign-bred winner since Omar Khayyam in 1917. Bill Hartack bounces back and wins the jockey champion ship. (I still won t be able to pick a favorite to show.) TENNIS Alex Olmedo will be the new golden boy of tennis. And Pancho Gonzales will knock down Ashley Cooper as fast as they can set him up in the other alley. BASKETBALL The Boston Celtics will wallz to the NBA championship and Ken tucky will capture its second con secutive NCAA crown. FOOTBALL Pro football will be bigger than ever and the Baltimore Colts will win their second Western Division crown. The Cleveland Browns will bounce back to regain Eastern Big Eight, T-Men In Tax Hassle KANSAS CITY Wi-The U.S. Rev enue Service is trying to collect $5,580 in taxes from the Big Eight Conlerence on money paid to ref erees, umpires and other officials who work its athletic contests. The conference Wednesday asked U.S. District Court here to issue an order of abatement against E. O. Bookwalter, district director of the revenue service. Bookwalter served notice on the conlerence December 12 that it owed the $5,580 in withholding tax es and social security deductions for 1953 through 1957. The conference argued 'that game officials are paid by the schools involved, not the confer ence. Zimmerman Lays Claim For S-Cal LOS ANGELEo (AP) "Anyone want to argue about Southern California being the sports center of the world? Paul Zimmerman, sports editor of the Los Ange'cs Times asked the question today after he said more than 9'j million spectators attended major sports events in the area during 1958. Racing showed an attendance of 4.608.919 to lead the list. OI.MEDO SEEDED THIRD PERTH. Australia tl'PD Alex Olmedo, the .toast of the tennis world, was seeded only third for the West Australian tennis cham pionships. Andres Gimeno of Spain and Barry MacKay of Day ton.
