FURIOUS ATTACK ine tine game also will be played at Yankee Stadium, scene oi ine uiams two exciting games with the Browns. It will be car ried on network television (NBC) with New ork and a 75-mile area DlacKed out. The Giants are braced for a furious attack from would-be ticket buyers. There was no advance sale. Once again it was the grudging defense of the 11 hangmen that tnrinea tne icy crowd of 61,274. They sang the praises of Conerly. Gifford and Webster, but most of all they roared approval for the 11 nangmen who carried out so ex pertly the pattern designed by Boss Says Aussie Team To Keep Cup BRISBANE, Australia (AP) Harry Hopman, Australia's wilv Davis Cup captain, saw the United States route Italy in the interzonc final over the weekend in Perth, but he was far from impressed. "Australia should hold the Cup," the veteran tactician said complacently. "No doubt the Americans will improve in the next 10 days, but so will Ashley Cooper and Mai Anderson." Hopman, who brought the Cup back to Australia in 1951 and has sen it go overseas just once since, began formal preparations for the challenge round next Mon day, luesriay and Wednesday by sending his team of Cooper, Ander son Neale Fraser and Rod Laver through a light workout. Perry Jones; 70, U.S. captain, smiled broadly when told of Hopman 's opiimistic forecast. "My own confidence is in no way shaken," he smiled. "I still am not prepared to announce who will play our singles, but I'm not worrying too much." Jones may have made up his mind, but to most observers he noes have a problem. His No. player. Ham Richardson, has been unimpressive, and could wind up on the sidelines in the challenge round. Barry MaeKay, who substituted for him when the interzone final was decided, licked Italy's Nicola Pietrangeli 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 8-6, 8-6 in one of the two final singles Sun day. Alex Olmedo won the other, downing Orlando Sirola 20-18, 6-1, 6-4 for a 5-0 U.S. sweep. Just-how impressed Jones was by MacKay's play, he wouldn't say. Big Barry, who was dropped from the first team in favor of Olmedo a week or so ago, showed signs of brilliance against Pietran geli. But he had trouble keeping his big service under control and was upset by some questionable line calls. v Olmedo. who practically carried the doubles burden alone when he teamed with Richardson, is as sured a spot against the Aussies. Richardson is not happy over the talk. He is a diabetic and was not feeling well during the dou bles. "That was an isolated instance" he said. "I feel fine now and know I can go at top speed in any three-day test." Tom Landry, the defensive coach ine Giants four-man defensive line was tremendous. Andy Robus ieni and Jim Katcavage at the enas and nosey Grier and Dick 'Little Mol Modzelewski at the dimes simply wrecked the Cleve land offense. With Sam Huff back ing up the middle, taking dead aim at the great Jimmy Brown, and Cliff Livingston and Harland Svare adding their brawn as line backers, Cleveland made only 24 .vaius, rusning. Jimmy Brown, who ci a league record with 1,527 yards in regular season plav, was "eld to eight yards in seven car ries. EXCELLENT JOB The alert deen rinrenca nf r in don Crow (he interceniM Carl Karlivacz. Jim Patton and tm Tunnell turned in an pviinni joh when Cleveland's badlv rushed passers took to the air. Milt Plum who was injured in the first half, and Jim Ninowski. mmnlptoH m of 27. But all the defense in the world wouldn't have helped Ihe. Giants if they hadn't been able to score. tthe only touchdown was a trickv thing on a frozen field, an 18-yard play late in the irst period. Conerly took the ball from cen ter and handed off to Webster coming around from right half back. Webster gave it to Gifford, reversing from his left halfback spot. Gifford cut through the right side ot tne line to the 10 and then tossed a basketball-type lateral that carried about 15 or 20 yards to Conerly, who went all the way. "I don't know when I scored be fore, said Conerly. the 37-vear- old quarterback from Ole Miss who has thrown 144 touchdown passes. It was something new we nut in this week," said Conerly. "The lateral on the end was optional. I'm out there and he (Gifford i knows I'm there." The Giants' olher points came on Summerall's 26-yard field goal, set up by a 35-yard pass from Conerly to Bob Schnelker. Jimmy Brown simply was de feased right out of the ballpark. "Things didn't turn out as well as we expected. 'We had several close games." Dawkins Tabbed Rhodes Scholar SWARTHMORE. Pa. (UPD- Pete Dawkins, one of Army's most outstanding cadets, had an other honor to add to his huce list today that of a Rhodes scholar. The 20-year-old West Pointer. who has distinguished himself as an athlete, cadet officer, class president, musician and vocalist, was one of 32 too collegiate young men selected Sunday as Rhodes scholarship winners. The scholarships, which call for two years of study at Oxford Uni versity in England in the field of the recipient's choice, were estab lished in the will of Cecil John Rhodes, British statesman and fi nancier, in 1899. , played Tor the Irish from 1035-37 and was freshman coach in 1938, will take over. Kuharich, a native of South Bend, is currently head coacn oi tne prolessional Wash ington Redskins with whom he re ccntly signed a live-year contract Kuharich could not be reached for comment hut. George Preston Marshall, owner of the Redskins, saia i aon t know anything about it i ought to hear something in ine morning. rn ... umer names wmen popped up included Frank Leahy, Brennan's predecessor: Bcrnie Crimmins, lormer Indiana coach and one of Brennan s assistants; Hugh De vore, who coached the Irish in 1945 while Leahy was on military leave and has been a Brennan assistant, and Andy Pilney, Tu lane's head coach. Brennan, 30, who admitted hav ing miuwn oi nis dismissal for a couple of days, said he did not Know .whom his successor would be but added "I can only say it will not be someone at Notre Dame. Diennan said ne is not sure what his plans are but "I'd like to remain in coaching. It all hap pened so fast, I haven't had time to reflect. I'll think about it for a couple of days and decide after that." , Although he experienced only one losing season, Brennan's stay at Notre Dame was turbulent. After a successful tenure with Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago wnere nis teams won an unprece' dented three straight city cham pionships, Brennan went to Notre Dame as freshman coach in 1933. Early in 1954, he was named to succeed Leahy who quit with record of 87-11-9 second only 10 KocKne s lOa-12-5. Because Brennan was only Z Ihen, there was some rumbling but this died out quickly when Notre Dame finished with a 9-1 record, losing only to Purdue. In 1955, Notre Dame had a respecta ble 8-2 record. Then came what actually started Brennan's downfall. Notre Dame completed the 1956 season with two victories and eight defeats. The wolves were howling but Brennan bounced back in 1957 with a 7-3 which included victo ries over Army and Oklahoma. With the entire squad back this year great things were expected. However, the Irish lost to Army, Purdue, Pitt and Iowa and fin ished with a 6-4 record.
