By TOM STIMMEL The testimony of two doctors bot called as defense witnesses opened today the second week o the first degree murder trial o, Myron Barkley. The defense witnesses were Dr. Edward M. Scott, a Portland psy chologist, and Dr. Harry Daniel ton, a Medford psychiatrist. Both men had examined the 26-year-old defendant after 'his arrest in the rifle slaying of his half-brother, Eldon "Beanie" Cress, September 6. Defense Attorney Donald A. W Piper had attempted to place Dr. Danielson's testimony before the seven man, five-woman circuit court jury late Friday but state objections and time forced a post ponement. Piper explained to the court that he was attempting to place Dr. Danielson on the stand out of logi cal order because his other wit ness, Dr. Scott, was on a plane flying above the city. It could not land because of foggy conditions. He said he felt it was best to place Dr. Danielson on the stand while waiting for Dr. Scott's im minent arrival. Dr. Danielson presented very lit tle testimony, however, because Piper's most pertinent question- did Dr. Danielson s examinations indicate the defendant "under stands the nature and consequences of this) act, if he did so act, and know right from wrong" drew immediate and vociferous objec tions from District Attorney Ar thur A. Beddoe. Beddoe objected on four specific night in Portland when he was awakened "in the wee hours" by Barklty, who "was terribly upset and confused." "He had tried to commit suicide by putting his head in a gas oven but he didn't have courage to rui on the gas. The priest described another night when Barkley borrowed his car and was arrested. The reason. ip said, was drinking. Fr. Goodrich, who testified with frankness and with clarity, once observed: "1 felt like a fireman. 1 always got there late." Beddoe. in cross examination, asked it Barkley had not been given a "high type of academic. religious and moral training." "He was exposed to it," the wit ness answered. Fr. Goodrich, answering a ques lion about Barkley's later moods relerri'd to an incident this yea' when Barkley was on the phone crying. Beddoe suggested that cryiilj mixed with noises in a long distance telephone conversation, might have been misinterpreted. "Did you know it was crying?" he judge asked. "I've worked with kids of all ges for 13 years." the priest an wcred. "I know bawling when I .ar it." Hope Pushes Yule Tour TORREJON, Spain UPI Bob Hope, ignoring doctor's orders to take it easy, pushed ahead to day with a grueling Christmas tour of U.S. bases overseas. Hope was hospitalized briefly at the U.S. Air Force's Moron Field after his arrival in Spain Sunday, following an attack of dizziness apparently brought on by high blood pressure and exhaus tion. He was up and about again, however, in time to play a sched uled show for the troops. He refused to cut down the 12 day, 10-show schedule of his tour of bases in the Azores, Morocco, Spain, Italy, Germany . and Ice land. "The doc said I wasn't getting enough sleep," Hope said. "We cot only a few hours rest before leaving New Jersey, and nothing at the Azores. Then I played a benefit golf, match when I should have been in bed and, man, it's been murder. - "But I love it. We play in hang . ars and have to scream our lungs out, we get rained on sometimes, ' but I love it. The service people are great audiences, and they really appreciate our coming." Hope had only eight hours of broken sleep in the first 72 hours of his tour. He was 45 minutes ' late to his first show in Spain be -. cause of his brief stay in hospital, ' but he laughed it off. ' "The doc counted my corpuscles and figured I'd been hoarding ithem," he said. "He made me rest, and I was okay after a while." jrounds, principally that part of )r. Danielson's testimony would ie based upon examinations made y Dr. Scott. The jury was with Irawn once again while the point was being argued, but upon the jury's return Judge David R. Van denberg adjourned court until 10 a.m. today. The legal sparring accompanying Dr. Danielson's testimony and the grim details of death that marked testimony earlier in the trial were in high contrast to much of Fri day's session when a Catholic priest occupied the stand. The witness was Fr. John M Goodrich, director of St. .Mary's Home for Boys near Portland where Barkley lived from the time he was 10 years old until he went t6 Central Catholic High School in Portland and subsequently into the Marines. rr. Goodrich, in answer to a question, described himself as Bar kley s closest friend and confidant, At one point the priest said: "I lelt he had nobody except me Piper questioned the priest ii tensely upon "the matter of moods and mood changes," but the testi mony also delved deeply into the private matters of Barklev s life. rr. Goodrich brought with him letters he had received from Bar kley when the defendant was in the service. One described a hike which all recruits were forced to take, but on which Barkley said he was tempted to "fall down and let the rest go on. He did not, Barkley s letter said. because Barkley thought U about wnat you (Fr. Goodrich) wou d think of me," (2) that "I've nev er quit before, and won't quit now. and (3) "about Christ carry ing the cross to Calvary: if Christ would do that for me, I can do this." Fr.
