LOUIS (AP)-Police Investi gating the mystery slaying ol a $400-a-month clerk are trying to figure out where $87,000 worth of life insurance fits into the picture if it does. James Bullock, 27, was found dying of bullet wounds in front of the City Art Museum Wednesday night. He worked for the Union Electric Co. by day, attended classes at the University of St Louis three nights a week and Saturday, and sang in a church choir on Sunday. His wife of six months, Edna Ruth, 23, added 1250 a month to the couple's income as a kinder garten teacher. In addition, they received $130 a month rent on the other half of a recently-purchased duplex in which they lived. That gave them a total of $780 a month before taxes and de ductions. Police, who provided the figures, said that out of this modest in come the couple was paying $255 month on the duplex, $55 on a car, and $35 on turnilure. iney a'sn were making payments on a $2,000 credit union loan used to make part of the down payment on the duplex, and paying pre miums on the $87,000 worth of life insurance. An insurance policy for $45,000 came to light Friday when a quar terly payment of $85.8a was due Police said Mrs. Bullock had told them she knew of only $42,000 worth of life insurance on her hus band: a $9,000 policy with his em ployer, two $5,000 policies, and a $23,000 policy covering the mort gage on the duplex. The investigation turned up om- er baffling angles. For example Mrs. Bullock was married for about two years to a dentist, Dr. Glennon E. Engleman, 31. They were divorced more than two years ago. Engleman refused to testily at an inquest Friday on the ground that he might incriminate himself. He also refused to take a lie de tector test, police said. Radios fleas tatteHm) at u 1 $0095 7 1 PORTABLE RADIO Med fTltJr $6195 Main in Klamath Fall A lie detector lest also was re fused, police said, by Thomas Johnson, a high school teacher who testified he met Engleman at the dentist s office at 7:15 D.m Wednesday and they didn't part until 8:55 p.m. after visiting a drugstore nelow the ollice. It was about 7:30 p.m. Wednes day that Bullock was found dying in front of the museum. The druggist at the downstairs store. Oliver C. Funsch, testified that he and an office boy tried to arouse someone in Engleman's office shortly after 7 p.m. but got no response. He said that was aft er he received a telephone call from an anonymous woman who ex pressed concern for the dentist's safety. Funsch said the caller told him she was phoning for a woman friend who had been In Engle man's office earlier. The druggist said Engleman and a friend walked into the drug store about 7:40 p.m. The inquest was recessed until Tuesday after Engleman balked at testifying. Mrs Bullock was ex cused from testifying after her at torney said she was suffering from shock. Networks OK New Contract NEW YORK (AP) Major ra dio-tclevision networks and the American Federation of Tele vision and Radio Artists have agreed on a new contract, end ing a dispute which produced threat of a strike. Donald F. Conaway, national executive of AFTRA, called the new pact "highly satisfactory." The union represents 12,000 an nouncers and performers, most of them in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. The new contract includes an increase in guaranteed base an nual pay of announcers from $10, 000 to $11,000. They also will get extra pay for overtime or free lance work. Performers will be paid for the first eight times a taped show is repeated on the air instead of the first five times. The agreement also shortens the base pay rehearsal time and boosts the hourly rate for rehears al overtime. Pay scales for all performers were not disclosed. Rancher Sees Price Hike PORTLAND (AP)-An Oregon rancher who is president of the National Assn. of Wheat Growers says reduced wheat acreage al lotments and support prices will push marketing cost margins be tween the producer and consumer up. Floyd Root of Wasco, in Port land en route home from Wash ington, said he conferred with Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Benson. He said he believed the U.S. Department of Agriculture would recommend further reductions of both the acreage allotments and price supports. This, he predicted, would cause the farmer to shift his production from wheat to teed grain, thus forcing an Increase in the feed grain surplus while reducing the wheat surplus. It is the opinion of the National (Assn. of Wheat Growers) the lower prices for wheat will not aid in solving the problem of ex cess supplies, but will only serve to increase the margins of mar keting costs between the producer and consumer," he said. Court Frees Slay Witness TILLAMOOK , Ore. (AP) A si lent witness jailed (or contempt of court has been released from the Tillamook County jail here. He is Airman 2.C. David Mov ers of Tacoma, Wash., who re fused to testify in the second de gree murder trial of Lclani Bat ke. 21, Tillamook. .Meyers was held in the jail for three months prior to the trial as a material witness. When he refused to say whether he knew Miss Batkc, Meyers was found in contempt and sent back to jail. Circuit Judge Jack Bohannan Friday disclosed he ordered Mov ers' release from the jail Tues day. Meyers is stationed at a ra dar station at nearby Mount Hobo. Miss Batke, charged with kill ing her new-born son, was found innocent by reason of insanity, and released. Cousins Admit Robbery Attempt LA GRANDE (AP)-Two cou sins walked into court here Fri day and admitted trying to rob a La Grande market. Circuit Judge W.F. Browntown handed out two-year state prison terms to Alonzo Williams, 20, and Elijah B. DcClue, 21, both of La Grande.
