WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER 17. 1358 2 County Horse Breeders Help Revive Lost Strain HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON A breed of horses that served royalty from the time ot the Ming Dynasty to the Nez Perce War is being revived in Klamath County and elsewhere in Oregon. The breed is Appaloosa, a strain believed to date back farther than any other known breed. Appaloosas neared extinction in the 1930 s but the breed has been patiently revived and now prom ises to become a prize breed once more. The two men in Klamalh Countv breeding Appaloosas are Harold Harkey of Klamath Falls and Vir gil Barry of Bly. Harkev has been breeding Appaloosas for about two years, and Barry for one year. Harkey has sold a few of his horses, including one that won blue ribbons in the National Appaloosa Show at Canby, Oregon, in 1957. He has, however, retained a promising colt sired by "Rocky Road." Both men find fascination in Seedlings Are u Still Available The Oregon State Forest Nurser ies have a large supply of ponder csa pine seedlings available for distribution to woodland owners. ' Besides being a major timber tree. ponderosa pine has assumed a po sition of being one of the accepted Cb-Iatmas tree species on the West Coast. This tree is particu larly well adapted to both Klam ath and Lake counties. The seedlings are delivered to the woodland owner for $12 per thousand. For orders of 10,000 trees or more, the purchaser may take delivery at the nursery for 9 per thousand. Tree order blanks may be ob tained from a county agent, the soil conservation service, the coun ty ASC office, or state forestry headquarters. "Those wanting trees should submit their orders soon so as to be assured delivery. Federal cost sharing is avail able to woodland owners for tree planting (including cost of trees), thinning, pruning, etc. Many wood land owners of Klamath and Lake counties are taking advantage of this program. His horses were Appaloosas. Since the revival of the breed in the United States, particularly in the West, Appaloosa horse clubs nave Been formed in 21 states. Harkey is a director from this area in the Oregon Appaloosa Horse Club, which met recently in Eugene with 66 breeders at tending. A. J. CHRISTMAS PARTY MOUNT SHASTA-The Mount Shasta Elementary School PTA will hold a Christmas party Thurs day evening, December 1R, in the high school auditorium. This will begin at 8 o'clock. The opening will consist of various vocal selec tions under direction of Mrs. R. B. Manley. These will be followed by folk dancing portraying Christmas in Mexico. The nativity will be portrayed by members of the PTA PLANE DUE TODAY HAVANA (UPI) - The first of three big British-made turboprops which Cu'iana Airlines plans to use in its Transatlantic service is scheduled to reach here today. Disbursement Announced DUNSMUIR Disbursement of $23,366 by the Dunsmuir Recrea tion Commission for the current year has been announced by Thelma Bender, commission treas urer. Of this sum, ilo.775.96 repre sents wages for lifeguards and pool supervision and maintenance workers at the ball park and city park. Capital outlay expenditures accounted for $8,719.95. This was primarily for lights at the ball park, fence rebuilding and painting and .one year s work on the city park master plan. Preparations are now being completed for an expanse of turf at the Dunsmuir City Park, Mrs. Bender said. The remaining funds went for insurance, materials and si'ppliei and lights, water and telephone at the swimming pool and ball park. Pool receipts, the recreation dis trict tax and miscellaneous receipts from ball park users represents the district's income, Mrs, Bender explained. The recreation commission budg ets all funds at the beginning of the fiscal year. If the monies are not used they are subject to re version to the Siskiyou County gen eral fund. U.S. May Defend Canada; Purchase Of Planes Mulled OTTAWA (AF)-Is the Canadi- an government prepared to have U.S. planes take over the Canadi an air force's defense job in Canada? This is one of the factors the government will consider next year when it decides whether to order the sleek new CF105 Arrow supersonic jet interceptor into production. Questions have been raised about the wisdom of pouring mon ey into a fighter plane when mis siles are coming to the fore as de fensive and offensive aerial weap ons. Prime Minister John Diefenbak- er has estimated that 100 Arrows would cost around 900 million dol lars. More than 10 per cent of this fiscal year's $1,686,000,000 defense budget has been spent on Arrow development, tremendous sums have also been spent in past years. Canada is the partner of the united stales in the North Amer ican Air Defense Command. It was announced in September that two U.S. Bomarc guided mis sile stations would go into opera tion in Canada in 1961 at a cost of 164 million dollars. The decision on the Arrow was delayed until spring. A decision Is expected by March.
