Stassen contended this helped to defeat GOP candidates in the Nov. 4 congressional elections, in which the Democrats scored their higgesl gains since New Deal days. Nixon's telegram, sent about two weeks before the election, said the Democratic campaign had passed its peak. He particularly urged GOP can didates to take the offensive on the issue of the firmness of our foreign policy against Communist aggression." He said all the Dem ocrats offered was "a return to the Acheson policy of weakness and appeasement which contrib uted to the loss of China and led to the Korean War." Dean Ache- son was secretary of state under former President Harry Truman. On the economic front, Nixon said that the Democrats offered only "a return to the radical pol icies that in years failed to pro duce prosperity except in war or as a result of war."
