KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON PAGE SA Soustelle Must Find Way To Hake Cabinets Stable PARIS (API Jacques Soustelle. a hatchet man who delisted in collecting scalps of governments under the fourth Republic, now ynust find ways to make French cahinets more durable. Soustelle is looming as one of the biq men of the new National Assembly as a result of the extra ordinary .success of his new party, the Union for a New Republic (UNRi, in the first round last Sunday of elections for a new As sembly. The UNR got 17.6 per cent of the votes and elected 10 deputies. In runort balloting next Sunday, the party is expected to roll its Assembly strength to well above 100 and perhaps as high as 150 deputies. It may well emerge as the biggest single group among the 5-tli Assembly members. The UNR actually is a jerry huilt coordinating committee for three separate smaller parties. It was put together for the elections and may fall apart after the vot ing is over. The only cohesive ele ment is that all the founders are old-time supporters of Premier de Gaulle. ! Some reports have said De Gaulle found the UNR surge a little embarrassing because of the faction's rightist tinge, especially n the critical Algerian issue. Soustelle and his cohorts are closely allied with the European settlers in Algeria, who are clam oring for all-out integration with France. De Gaulle has refused so far to endorse this idea and is reported to favor a solution link ing the two areas on a federal basis. One report was published that if De Gaulle is elected president as is generally expected he would prefer to avoid naming Soustelle premier. This report said the general might turn in stead to Michel Debre, now jus tice minister, who had a big part in framing the new constitution. Debre is also a veteran Gaullist. Soustelle is charged with tons of political dynamite. He was one of the main plotters against the Fourth Republic and a leader of the uprising in Algeria which brought the republic down. Politi cal loaders of the center and left, particularly the Socialists, have not forgotten this. Whether or not he is premier, Soustelle must work hard to pre serve the Fifth Republic, which he did so much to create. He must help to keep the new regime from being hamstrung by the ever changing governments of former i years. It is a complete reversal for Soustelle, He personally forced the downfall of Premiers .Mau rice Bourges-Maunoury and Felix Gaillard and his scheming tum bled Premier Pierre Pflimlin and the republic itself. 188 M Doctors Musi Not Forget Patients Are Human Beings ; By DELOS SMITH ; UPI Science Editor NEW YORK (UPIIIn this day of wonderful scientific know-how physicians can become so enrap tured with their knowledge of diseases and of fancy medications with which to cure them, that they forget their patients are hu man beings. :Thus spoke Dr. David Woolfolk Barrow of the Kaiser Foundation Hospital, San Francisco, in lec turing his fellows on the values of humility and the human touch in the practice of a highly scien tific medicine. :"The human body has a pro digious capacity for recovery," he told them. "This, added to the self-limited nature of many dis eases, means that almost any therapeutic regime in fact none at all will often eventuate in the patient's recovery." As a matter of fact, he con tinued, there is "a real danger iq the administration of some gen erally harmless agent (drug) al leged to shorten morbidity or pre vent complications to which any specific patient may be unduly sensitive." f .He cited some of the grave "side effects" which can be caused by some of medical sci ence's potent new drugs in the "unduly sensitive," and added: "The number of such tragedies is small, but if the agent is not really needed, why use any? When the patient's comfort is the sole consideration, simple medica tions suffice." Scientific doctors were also warned against "the little joke." It is all very well to put patients at their ease with a joke, but jokes go astray. "Interest, con cern and kindliness can all be expressed with some formality and are then less apt to be mis interpreted," he said. I He took no positive stand on! the question of what a doctor should tell a patient about the patient's condition. "Where the disease is a simple one and the patient's reasonable cooperation can be anticipated, it doesn t make very much difference what the patient is told except that every patient likes to be told something," he said. "When relief of the condition requires the patient's cooQera tion, it is impossible to know whether this can be obtained bet ter by a detailed explanation of the disease and all its complica tions, or by a direct order." But when any patient refuses treatment for a condition that could be fatal without treatment, that patient "should be told the truth as the physician believes it to be." And the doctor should keeD after him until he does ac cept treatment, and "not leave him derelict."
