SALEM i APi The governor's oflice is a quiet place now. No body seems very much interested in seeing a governor after he's defeated. The busy place is Secretary of State Mark Hatfield's office. Ev erybody loves a winner. For the first time since he took office Jan. U, I'm. Gov. Robert D. Holmes has time to sit back and reflect. He is very proud of his record. This is his story as he told it in an interview just before he left for Hawaii to attend the Western Governors' Conference: Q. Will you provide leadership for the Democratic Party after you leave office Jan. 12? A. I'll see anybody in the party who wants counsel. I don't plan to aggressively play any particu- Television Star Changes Name I HOUSTON. Tex. (AP) Orison Whipple Hungerford Jr. changed his legal name Monday to the one which brought him fame in the Cheyenne TV series: Ty Hardin. Hardin said he preferred his old name because it didn't smack so much of Hollywood but that it was a matter of convenience. "My contract is in the name of Ty Hardin. 1 pay my rent as Ty Hardin, and my checks are signed Ty Hardin." he said. Dist. judge Byron Johnson approved and signed the name change order. Clerk's Yell Scares Thief SAN FRANCISCO AP Some where in San Francisco there's a man about 35 who would just as soon forget what happened Mon day night. He sidled up to a clerk in a dress shop of Market Street, his hand in his pocket, and ordered her to open the cash register. "I won t, said Isabel Ramirez 23. "I'll blow your head off," he warned. "I'm not going to open it," said Isabel. He tried opening it himself. Isabel screamed as loud as she could. That did it. He fled. Police arc still looking for him. Auto Heiress 'Not Guilty' ! LOS ANGELES (AP) - Gregg Sherwood Dodge, actress-wife of 'auto heir Horace Dodge II, has been found innocent of charges that she committed battery lagainst four police officers. But a municipal court jury ruled ; Monday that she was guilty of '. having been intoxicated, and the court set sentencing on that count for next Monday. '. Mrs. Dodge charged at her trial '(hat officers dragged her by her ;hair, used a ju-iitsu hold on her. and that policewomen humiliated her by searching her in front of male officers. She was arrested Aug. 2(5 along with Chicago columnist Irv Kup- cinet. who still faces trial on a drunk driving charge. Boy, 11, Admits Slaying Of Kin BURNS (API McKinlcy Lowe, a sheriff's deputy, said Monday that Larry Davis, 11, admitted the fatal shooting of his grand mother, Mrs. Bessie Davis, 63. Teamsters Make Movie ST. LOUIS AP) The Teamsters Union has made a movie to pro test recent hearings by the Mc- Clellan labor rackets committee. It's a 33-minute film called "Trial bv Committee." It consists of excerpts of testimony before the committee by Harold Gibbons, tt Louis vice president of the Team tiers, and James R. Hoffa, Team ters oresident! Edwin D. Dorsey. St. Louis Teamsters official, said, "We feel Trial by Committee' . . . demon trates the unfairness of the Mc- Clellan hearings. The tactics and statements of the committee mem bers prove how these hearings are a threat to organized labor and the rights of citizens everywhere." We have been gaining a good head of steam gradually, and I hope this activity will continue. 1 hope we won t lose my concept that the governor is a salesman for the slate. Q. Will Ihe Democratic major ity in the Legislature be able to work with Hatfield? A. The question should be: Will Mark work with the Democratic legislalors? Naturally, the Demo crats won't respond to his sugges tions as readily as they would to mine. But they are Just as re sponsible as. Mark is. There will be no real warfare between the Legislature and the governor. The Legislature will pass a real pro gram. , Q. Will the disagreements be tween Sens. Morse and Ncuberger hurt the Democratic party or the state? A. This disagreement is very unfortunate. It's regrettable. But it won t damage their unity on larger issues, and it won't hurt the party or the state. Q. Will you assist in the transi tion from your administration to that of Hatfield s? A. I'm doing everything possi ble to make it easy. When we get Ihe budget drafted. Ill call Mark and study it with him. .you most proud? W hat do you think of Hat- , ww, reMlv made a cood field's proposal to rebuild the Republican Parly? A. He made it clear in the cam paign he wanted lo he bipartisan, and that he would appoint people only on their qualifications. So it came to me as a shock when, right after the election, he said he was going to rebuild his party. Q. What kind of a message will you have for the Legislature? A. it probably will be 15 min utes long, and possiblv less. The slate budget is my responsibility, so I'll explain it briefly. Then I'll briefly outline some of those things I would have recommend ed had I been governor. The Dem ocrats are entitled to know that. Q. Of what achievements are ItC DISASTER MEET Otlo Smith, disaster chairman of the Klamath Basin Chapter. American Red Cross, has called a meeting for members of the disaster conimiltce and represen latives of all local organizations which provide assistance in family fires. The meetings are to he held at the chapter house Tuesday. November 25, at 7:3(1 p.m. Purpose of the meeting is to plan for cooperative effort to insure adequate assistance to those needing it without duplication. start in our Department of Plan ning and Development. I have appointed men and women on merit. I have put the interests of the state first and political considerations sec ond.
