Jeff, Wind Eye A-1 Title By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS It will be Jefferson ot Portland and Medford, the No. 1 and 2 teams in the Associaled Press poll, for the Oregon Class A-l high school football championship at Portland's Multnomah Stadium Friday night. Medford shaded Pendleton ranked No. 9, in a 27-26 thriller at Medford Saturday night. Jefferson had won its way into the final with a 380 defeat of West Linn Friday night. Mike Murray's conversion kick one of three he made, provided the margin that beat Pendleton in the final quarter. It came after a 46-yard Med ford march in nine plays. Gerry Lyons, Mcdford's leading ground gainer, went the final seven yards to the touchdown that tied the sr"re. Vendleton came back to give Medford a had scare. AP Army and Navy are showing a tradition ally healthy respect for each oth er's football prowess as they pre pare for their annual football bat tle at Philadelphia Saturday. Steven Belichick. chief scout for Navy, calls the Cadets "the most explosive football team I've ever seen much better and entirely different from the team we beat last year." "Their passing attack is strong er than it has been, and in (half back) Joe Bellino they have a greater individual threat," Hall sums up. "As a sophomore he has made mistakes, but he has made fewer and fewer and is one of the finest runners in the country if not the finest." Belichick counters that Army halfback Pete Dawkins "is the finest all-around back I've seen in college lootball." He says Dawkins is a great team leader a "take charge" guy who sets the pace for the Cadets a tremendous runner, good pass er, good blocker, "and ought to win every award in the books this year." But the strength of the undefeat ed Cadets runs much deeper than individual players, the Navy back- field coach says. "This team has impressed me more than any others because they do many things well and are so explosive." he says. "They can kill you either passing or running." This year Army is also a pass g team one of the nation's finest and both Dawkins and An derson take a hand in this along with quarterback Joe Caldwell. A lot of Army's passing is off run ning plays and if you draw your linebackers in they throw over you, Belichick says. Army scout Hall considers Navy's passing attack, guided by junior quarterback Joe Tranchini, and the running of Bellino, on punt and kickoff returns as well as rushing plays, lo be major factors for Army to stop. Merrill Plays Yoncalla 'IT In Grid Finals By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Merrill and Yoncalla will clash next weekend for the Oregon class B high school football title. Neither the site of the game nor the date were set at once. Merrill, playing on its home field, found a heavy fog no prob lem as it trampled Umatilla, 31-0 in a semi-final playoff game Saturday. Yoncalla squeezed by Tillamook iB Catholic, 7-0. on the losers field. John Haskins got Merrill roll ing in the second period with an 85-yard run through the Umatilla defense. An even longer run covering 95 yards was reeled off by Has kins' teammate, Bud Maupin, in the fourth period. Haskins also scored on runs of one and 15 yards. Umatilla made its only serious scoring threat in Ihe final quarter when it moved to the Merrill five yard line. But here, Merrill held for downs, and Maupin promptly raced away on his long scoring dash. Umatilla ran up 12 first downs to Merrill's live. But Merrill, with all its long runs, amassed 306 yards from scrimmage to 165 for Umatilla. Y oncalla moved 57 yards across a muddy turf for the lone touch down on its game at Tillamook. Jim Booth passed on an 11-yard play to Ron Ravel for Ihe score. Ravel ran across the extra point. In the drive Ravel also com pleted passes for 9 and 12 yards.
