Atlas Firin Called Off CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) A powerful Atlas missile sat poised in the open for several hours but the shoot finally was called off early Saturday for the second time in three days. The Air Force announced that once again technical troubles de layed the latest effort to fire the nation's intercontinental, ballistic missile. The launching plans called for a 3,000 mile shot across the Atlantic. It was another long, put profit less night for Convair astronautics crewmen who checked the 100-ton missile through a lengthy prelim inary countdown. Liquid oxygen, part of the giant rocket's fuel supply, whirled around the launch pad and left a thick coat of frost on the missile's frame. The "lox," as it is called. is stored inside the missile under extremely low temperatures and intense pressure. Just before the scrub was called a huge cloud of liquid oxygen popped from the base of the mis sile. The crewmen apparently were easing the pressure. EARLY BIRD! PASADKNA. Calif. It's That Man Again!" i 1 I :" i I Voters Elect Negro Woman HOUSTON. Tex. AP - The Houston school board Friday formally certified a Negro house wife as a winner in last week's school board elections. Mrs. Charles E. White, wife of an optometrist, thus became Hous ton s first Negro public office hold er since reconstruction days. A board canvass showed she polled 36.348 voles, about 8,000 more than her nearest opponent, incumbent Dr. John Glen. A few days after Mrs. White's election a cross was burned in her front yard. Police have made no arrests in the case. Smith has thus far named Condrey and Wayne Blair to this committee. It was announced that Lowell F. Turner, associate director of the field service division. United Community Funds and Councils, with headquarters in Portland, would be available as a special speaker early in December.
