The Arlington rancher and busi nessman said the present deficit spending spree the government is icnqaged in is nothing but a thinned-out economy that is even tually going to land us in hot water "if we don't use some com mon sense in appropriating money to everybody that holds his hand out. "The current give-away philoso phy, with its policy of getting the government into every business from power to education, is head ing this nation straight into socialism and we must call a halt to it," Weathcrford concluded. Weathcrford attended the annual Potato Festival banquet then rode I in the festival parade here Sat urday afternoon. Monday he ap peared at a noon joint meeting of the chamber of commerce and Lions Club at Burns and later at tended a regional Oregon Teach ers Association banquet, also at Burns, before taking off on the final leg of his fourth swing around the giant 18-county second district. WITH EXPENSES of the Klamath Union High School band trip to the East-West game the last weekend in December is offered by Nalley'i, Inc., which will redeem the faces of the empty Nalley potato chip bags and boxes between now and December 20 at two cents each end send the money to the band. Potato Chip Firm Offers Help Building Band Fund j money to the Klamath Union High School band which has been invit ed again to perform al the half time at the East - West game the last weekend in December. Nalley's, Inc., of Tacoma and Springfield, has offered to redeem; the faces of the M-cent and larger' packages and send the check to t h e KUHS band for travel ex penses to the game. Ken Radabaugh, Nalley's Spring field manager, said last week in Klamath Falls that normal con sumption of Nalley's potato chips during November and December can net a maximum of more than $300 lo the band if all of the bags and faces of Nalley's potato chip cartons arc put in the redemption boxes. Redemption rate is two cents each. Parents and Patrons are solidly behind the promotion, according to Jesse House, president of the group, and Mayor Lawrence Sla ter expressed his approval. "Chips and dips are part of en tertaining this time of year," House said. At two cents a copy, those empty bags and cartons arc worth money to our KUHS band." The band members will send a representative to help count the bags when the boxes are picked up by Dick Bowers, local Nalley's distributor. Parents and Patrons will send the empty bags to Nal ley's for redemption at two-cents each. Nalley's, Inc., in its 40th year, decided on promotion which would benefit the youth of individual communities. The program was presented, also, to Medford, Cen tral Point and Grants Pass, where it also received enthusiastic sup port for those high schools. "The high school is not asked to endorse any product.' Radabaugh pointed out, "nor are the students asked to buy or sell anything." If each family will just save its empty Nalley's potato chip bags or cartons and deposit them in the redemption boxes at local gro cery stores. Parents and Patrons members and Nalley's will see that the KUHS band gets the redemp tion money. The boxes will be available un til December 20. RECORD HOTTEST RAINFALL TOKYO (UPI) - Osaka Uni versity's biophysical laborato;y re corded the "hottest" rainfall in four years last Saturday, it re ported today, The station said it recorded radioactivity of 234,500 counts per square rhcter per min ute during the 24-hour period be ginning Saturday morning. Dr. YasuaM Nishiwaki, head of the laboratory, said this was the highest radioactivity count since the laboratory began checking "hot" rain in 1954. He said it probably came from a recent nu clear test.
