OREGON PAGE 3 A Foil Balloon To Be Fired WASHINGTON (AP) - An in flated balloon of aluminum foil and plastic film may be the next United States satellite to go into ornit around the earth. Such a sphere is to be included in the next Army satellite firing attempt, expected in the near fu ture at Cape Canaveral, Fla. It is to be sent aloft in a modified Ju piler-C rocket and inflated auto matically with nitrogen hundreds of miles above the earth. Blown up to a diameter of 1 feet, it could be seen with the naked eye in the reflected sun light of dawn and dusk. Similar balloons have been fired aloft with no attempt to put them into orbit from the Wallops Is land, Va., experiment station now operated by the National Aeronau tics and Space Administration. The final stage of a slightly mod ified Jupiter-C will be a three-foot cylindrical case carrying the com pressed balloon and a two-chan nel radio transmitter for tracking purposes. The balloon will not have any 1 instruments aboard, but scientists hope to learn something through visual observation of it. SF Abandons Trade Fair PORTLAND (AP) - San Fran c.co has decided not to compete with Portland's trade fair next summer. The California city .-earlier an rounccd plans for a fair which would have conflicted with Ore gon's 1959 Centennial Exposition and International Trade Fair. . The Portland Chamber of Com merce said Tuesday it has learned that the promoters of the San Francisco fair have post poned their scheduled show until 1960. CITY BRIEFS Food, Fellowship and Fun are on the menu at Pelican School for Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the school calcteria. Pelican PTA in vites the public to eat heartily of spaghetti, salad, buns, milk, coffee and cake, at moderate prices. Social Studies Group AAUW Social Studies Group will meet Thursday, October 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Mrs. H. O. Jucke- land, 20-13 Lavey Street. Discussion will be on problems of the senior citizens. The public is invited. Convalescing Forrest L. Kelly, of the T. B. Walters Insurance Agency, is convalescing at St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia, after undergoing spinal surgery on October 20. Rummage Sale There will be a rummage sale, sponsored by the Disabled American Veterans Auxil iary, on Friday and Saturday, in the VFW Hall, 515 Klamath Ave nue. Any persons wishing to do nate rummage are asked to phone TU 2-38S4. or to bring it to the VFW Hall Thursday evening. Formal Dance The Order of Rainbow for Girls, Assembly No. 57, will hold its annual formal dance Saturday, October 25, at the Yacht Club from 8:30 to 11:30. Theme this year will be Oriental Gardens. Everyone is invited. Pro grams will be on sale from Rain bow girls at Henley High School and KUHS the rest of the week. Meeting Christian Women's Fel lowship will meet at the First Christian Church on Thursday, Oc tober 23. Potluck luncheon at noon with the meeting to follow. Card Party Midland Grange Home Ec Club will sponsor a card party Saturday, October 25, in the grange hall at 8 o'clock. The pub lic is invited. All Youngsters between 10 and 15 years of age be at the city li brary at 7 o clock tonight for in struction in square and round dancing. Card Party There will be a spe cial short meeting of the Royal Neighbors of America at the IOOF Hall tonight at 7:30. The annual fall card party will follow at 8 o'clock. The public is invited. Carnation Club The Carnation Club will meet at the home of Mrs. Edith Wiard, 2705 Wiard Street, at 8 o'clock tonight (Wed nesday) for a Halloween party. All degree of honor members are invited. Recuperating J. A. Clark, 616 Lincoln Street, is in the Klamath Valley Hospital where he Is re covering from recent surgery. Roberts, as sistant national director of church relationships with the Boy Scouts of America, is to arrive in Klam ath Falls Thursday for a three-day visit during which he will meet with church leaders of the area Big Game Guide Uses Binoculars In Grizzly Tiff CODY, Wyo. (AP) Big game guide Roy Glasgow wrestled with a grizzly bear and came out of the contest with a slight hand wound. Glasgow said he was watching a grizzly cub through binoculars when the mother grizzly came crashing through the trees toward him. The bear was on him before he could escape. She wrestled him to the ground. When the bear started biting at his legs, protected by heavy leath er chaps, he jammed his binocu lars in its mouth. Suddenly the cub squceled and ran off. The mother bear forgot Glasgow and took off after the cub. Glasgow's hand was scratched. The binoculars were ruined. Red Dictator Said Failing VIENNA (AP)-The independ ent Vienna newspaper Die Presse reported today that Matyas Ra kosi, Stalinist dictator of Hungary until 1956, is dying in a Russian sanatorium. Quoting diplomatic sources, the paper said his doctors have given up hope for Rakosi, 66. who re portedly suffered a heart attack recently after a long period of failing health.
