Murphy, general manager of the McCloud Kiver Lumrjer com. . eany, to inform high school sen iors that the $500 college scholarship awards will again be made by the company to a boy and girl in the graduating class. In addition to the above award, a comparable amount will be paid to former recipients during their second year in college providing they maintain scholastic standards set by a local committee, selected by the company. A $500 award will be made each year for a period not to exceed four years of higher education to those meeting, the requirements. Awards will be made on the bas is of scholastic standing during the senior year: marks received in. college entrance hoard examina tion; a short essay to be written on some subject associated with the manufacture of lumber, citi zenship and leadership. These stu dents will be selected at the end of the school year by an impartial committee to he chosen by the company at a later date. in readiness for entertaining 400 delegates ot the tn-state conven tion of the Brotherhood of Rail road Trainmen and Auxiliary on October 11-12. A banquet and breakfast at the lodge and a ride on the chairlift are to be a con vention feature. The Chico Flying Club, who an nually make a hi-jinks trip to Dunsmuir, have booked October 18 for a preview of the mountain development. The Inter-County Chamber Commerce of Northern California will meet at the lodge on October 1. Other special pre-opemng vis its are being arranged for local Boy Scout groups and members of the Yreka High School honor society. Sports writers and newsmen of California and Oregon are being invited to a special press preview on October 25 and November has now been set as the unofficial opening date. A gala opening is being planned for Thanksgiving weekend. Good weather has enabled J. W. Briggs to make almost phenomen al progress on the last seven miles of the all-weather road being built to the lodge and chairlift site. The area around the lodge and the 500-car parking lot has been black- lopped. Weather forecasts are favorable and crews anticipate having the upper four miles black topped by the end of the week. The remainder of the road is he low the early snow level and can be completed without an eye on the sky. At a meeting of the board of directors Monday night, diCris tina was given the authority to arrange for supplementary per sonnel, h. A. Chnstensen, popu lar Dunsmuir chef, city council man and locker plant owner, has been assigned the dining room concession. Heron Engineering has been giv en the go-ahead to start design ing the enclosed tram lift which will take skiers and sightseers from the 9.600 foot level, the chairlift upper terminal point, to Shastarama point at an elevation of 11,127 feet. It is the intention of the direc tors to have the enclosed tram lift in operation next year, Call fornia's Olympic year. The upper lift will employ two 30-passenger trams with a capacity of 3oO pas sengers per hour and its cables will span the distance from the upper terminal ol the chairlift to shastarama point in one breath taking sweep without the use of interspacing support towers.
