OREGON HERALD ANT) NEWS, KIAMATH FALLS, OREGON PAGE 4 B 5J Woman Joins Honors List ALTURAS Mrs. Zoe Darlcnr Sears has been named to the new ly established honors list at Chico State College, Chico, according to announcement made by Dr. John Bergslresser, dean of students. Mrs. Sears achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or over. which is the equivalent of an A minus average, based upon com pletion of at ! e a s t 24 semester units at Chico Slate College. The honors list, established by the president's cabinet as a means of recognizing high scholarship, is open only to undergraduate stu dents. Mrs. Sears was one of the 62 Chico State students out of 3,100 students in the spring semester ending June 1 who made the cur rent honors list. She Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lovell Ingraham of Alturas. Operating Rights Listed Farmers who put all their eli eible cropland in the Conservation Reserve of the Soil Bank still will have certain "operating" rights on their farms. In the first place, farmers who take advantage of the additional 10 per cent payment for putting all their eligible land in the re serve can continue to live on the farm. While they cannot, of course, produce any Soil Bank base crops generally, all grain and row crops, these farmers can grow a farm garden sufficiently large to take care of the family's needs. If they -are so set up, there are several other things participat ing farmers can do on the farm, Among them, he listed: Use barns, other farm buildings, and feed lots; graze noncrop open pasture or range land that is not in the Conservation Reserve; manage al ready existing timber stands, fruit trees, vineyards, nursery stock, or nut trees. AH farmers who have questions about putting their entire eligible acreage in the program, and any others who are interested, are urged to consult with county ASC officials: Any farmer who has cropland regularly used for culti valed crops or tame hay is eli' gible to tako part. Civil Service Position Open An examination for geologist has been announced by the U.S. Civil Service Commission for filling po sitions paying starling salaries of ,4!)0 and 5,430 a year in various federal agencies in Washington, D.C., and throughout the United Stales. Some positions in foreign counlnes may also be filled. Most of the posilions to be filled are in the Department of Ihe Interior, principally in the Geological Sur vey. Some vacancies also exist in the Bureau of Reclamation and in Ihe Bureau of Mines. To qualify, applicants must pass a written test. In addition, they must have completed appropriate college study or show a cdmbina tinn of such study and experience in geological work. Applications must he filed with the executive secretary, ecologi cal Survey, Department of the Interior, Washington 25, D.C., not later than December 2, 11)58. Bailey on Vine Street in Klamath Falls. In describing the growing of this flower, she covered type of corm, size and growing methods. A corm an inch or an inch and a half across is the best size for plant ing, the larger corms wnn nai tops, showing age. Corms must be planted deep and regular wat ering provided. Smaller blooms, she stated are best used in ar rangements, the larger, showier blooms for show specimens. The Mt. Laki Club is sponsoring the special award premium for the best kept 4 II vegetable record hook for winners in future 4-H fairs. The award was given this year. Mrs. I. W. While made and do nated the crown to the 4-H flow er king this year, an honor won by grower of the best flower gar den. Mrs. White and Mrs. Crystel Cheyne assisted Francis Skinner and Lillian Hoffman, Klamath County 4-H agents, in judging 4-H gardens this year. Mrs. George Houck and Mrs. Will Blackman, judged the 4-H floral exhibits at the fair. Mrs. Richard Fleming demon strated the making of fresh flow er corsages, explaining the differ ent types for different occasions, showing use of foliage, the clever touting of net and ribbon. The lesson included the making of nose gays that make excellent gifts for hospital patients. Mrs. Dick Henzel, president, ap pointed Mrs. Paul Fairclo hospi tality chairman and Mrs. Richard triomintf nhnnft chairman to func tion in notifying club members to take flowers to tne community lounge.
