This is .Curly, a sturdy black horse who has been along on the Modoc Tribe Ride so often he knows the way all by himself. Any horse that can carry the vast bulk of a desk-bound newspaperman along the steep trails of the Warners is a splendid beast indeed. And curly did just that. Without complaining. Livestock Advisory Unit Meets To Talk Problems William F. Marshall. Klamath Falls, was in Salem recently to participate in a meeting of the State Department o( Agriculture's livestock advisory committee. The committee decided the prob lem of how to maintain an ade quate livestock theft control pro gram on the amount of money now available to enforce it should be presented to the Oregon Cattle men's Association at the annual meeting at Redmond in November. The department will prepare a fiscal analysis and comparison of the Oregon livestock brand inspec tion program's 1957 and 1958 re ceipts and expenditures to present to the industry organization. At the Friday meeting, depart ment officials pointed out that the receipts anticipated from the pres ent brand inspection fee of 25 cents per head will not meet the esti mated expenditures of $535,000 for the 1959-61 biennium. The livestock brand inspection program is sup t ported entirely by the industry ' on a fee basis. Since 1950 the aver age number of cattle inspected each year is 705.625 and the pro gram is presently $46,000 in the red. Before the annual meeting of the Oregon Cattlemen's Association, de partment officials will study the savings possible if clearance of out-of-state cattle were dropped from the livestock brand inspection! program. A report on savings pos sible through changing inspection methods at federal posted sale yards will also be prepared.- The committee also asked the department to investigate the rev enue possible by charging individ ual stockmen for mileage on point" of origin inspections and estray in vesications. In other action, the committee recommended that: 1. The livestock brand re-record ing fee to be left at $5 for a five year period. 2. The brand re-recording fee when the brand owner uses the same design on cattle and horses be $5 for the caltlc and $3 for the horses, or a combined fee of $fl instead of the present $10. 3. The law be changed to re quire a $10 fee for a new brand recording. (The present charge is $5.) 4. The transfer fee be raised, to $5 from $1. FOLLOW THAT PLANE VALHALLA, N. Y.
