Betty Dow Photo School Closure Policies Cause South Discontent By THE ASSOCIATED TRUSS Discontent over school closure policies broke out in integration troubled Arkansas and Virginia at the end of the first week of idle nes for thousands of pupils who normally would have been attend ing classes." . In Virginia, two Democratic as- lemblymen expressed c o n c e rn over the state's policy of massive resistance, which already has closed three schools. The opening dates of six white secondary schools in Norfolk were postponed until Sept. 29 and local groups were making plans for private schooling at Charlottesville. At Little Rock, Ark., 65 pupils enrolled at Hall High School adopted a resolution Friday asking that their school be re opened even if qualified Negro itutlAits are admitted. . Hall High originally had 731 pupils, but School Supt. Virgil Blossom said 130 of them hud transferred out Bnd presumably would attend school elsewhere. He said do pupils had transferred from Central High hut that none had transferred from Tech High or Horace Mann. A report circulated that Gov. Orval E. Faubus was studying the Mnnn High for Negroos bs an in tegrated school. Fauhus declined comment when reached at Dan ville, Ky., on the way to the Southern Governors Conference at Frankfort. In another development, a reli able source reported the Litlle Hock school board might resist handing over the city's four high schools to private nprrnlion. All lour were closed by Faubus after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered Integration resumed at Central High. Federal Hist. Judge John K. Miller refused a petition com manding the school board of Van Buren, Ark., to restore integration at two schools hailed two weeks ago by a boycott of white pupils. He indicated the order was iin 'necessary as the schools inte grated voluntarily. An official for the National Assn. for the Ad vancement of Colored People said the Negroes would return to the ichools Monday. In Virginia. William H. Hill. Charlottesville's representative in the Virginia House, said If Gov. J. Lindsay Almond Jr. did not propose some plan for opening the cilys two elementary schools ny Monday he would seek support for a special legislative session to change the laws. W. M. Pope, chairman of the Charlottesville Educational Foun dation, outlined plans for pupils to register for private schooling In recreation halls and lodges GRANGE NEWS FORT ROCK FORT HOCK The Fort Rock Orange will enter the Community Service- Contest for ln.Mt .v, ac cording to a decision reached at the September meeting Saturday Bight. The Fort Hock Grange re cently completed the report tor the past year's contest and was the only grange in Lake County to enter, according to Fdwin A. F-ske-lin, Pomona master. II. A. iltube) Long, member of tho committee working toward the designation nf the landmark. Fort Rock, as a slate park, slated that he will contact the park depart ment on a trip to Salem in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Hurl K. I.yman were obligated as new members of the grange. Long also reported that a nud Octoher date has been tentative ly set for testing for brucellosis In the north Lake County area. This, he pointed out, is a volun tary testing program. Because the hall is being re floored the annual Hunter's Rail sponsored by Fort Rock Grange, will be relinquished for this year. The Silver Lake Community Club will aponsor one, however, and plans are to resume this event at Fort Rock In w.vj. In Norfolk Virginia's largest city the school board postponed the opening of all high schools for one week after Federal list Judge Walter E.
