Oregon visitors were most nil merous with .Massachusetts, N e w Hampshire, Connecticut, North Carolina. West Virginia and Klori da close seconds. Visitors from the Midwestern and Southwestern states have also been numerous. Several parties from Hntish ( ohimhia have been guests Cant. J. Duffncr, senior medical officer of the Navy's experimental diving unit in Washington, D. C, said the. prospect results from ex periments in which swimming di vers breathe a mixture of helium and oxygen instead of the usual compressed air, which contains nitrogen and oxygen. He told the first International Symposium on Submarine and Space Medicine that it is now pro posed to furnish all frogmen with such a mixture. It would be car ried, as compressed air now is. in a so-called "scuba" apparatus. Scuba means "self contained un derwater breathing apparatus." The symposium is being spon sored by the American Institute of Biological Sciences with the sup port of the Defense Department. The condition known as the bends is technically called decom pression sickness. When a diver is deep in the wa ter, the increased pressure from the water causes any inert gas in his breathing mixture such as ntrogen or helium to be com pressed into his tissues. When he ascends the gas in his tissues is under lower and lower pressure. It he comes up too fast, the com pressed gas will be released in the form of bubbles. They can get into his tissues, his joints and even his brains and lungs. Duffner, in his report, said the new research has disclosed that much faster rates of ascent can lie tolerated when helium-oxygen is breathed underwater than pre viously believed possible. The research was undertaken, he said, alter a finding by Lt. Cmdr. Edward Lamphier, of his unit, that the body retained car bon dioxide when nitrogen-oxygen mixtures were breathed underwa ter. The lounge, located at 118 North Sev enth Street, is sponsored by the Klamath Basin Civic Service League. The attendance report was giv en at a meeting of the league held September 5 with 26 organi zations represented by 43 persons. Of the total number of lounge visitors last year, 11,746 were from Klamath Falls, 18,092 from the county, 3.360 from 32 states in the U.S. and 17 from Canada, Ger many, Alaska and South America. A total of 3.076 babies and pre school children were served by the lounge. Mayor Lawrence Slater offered number of constructive sugges tions for increasing the usefulness of the lounge. Ed Gowen, county commissioner, representing t h e Klamath County Court voiced its appreciation for the way in which the lounge is being managed.
