dent Eisenhower has put on the
books new laws lightening tax
loads in a few fields, increasing
the national debt ceiling and pro
viding 887 million dollars in edu
cation aid.
He has killed by pocket veto a
bill to increase federal aid to air
ports from the current 63 million
dollars a year to 100 million, and
continue it until the middle of 1962.
Those are highlights of Eisen
hower's action at his vacation
headquarters late yesterday dh 117
bills which Congress sent to him

1. Provide multimillion-dollar
tax relief to small business and
make scores of technical changes
in tne tax laws. Those changes
provide special new advantages to
some classes of taxpayers, while
at the same time blocking loop
holes which have given unintend
ed benefits to others.
2. Cut excise (sales) taxes for
folks who ride in air taxis, and
ease the tax burden on whiskv dis
tillers and movie tickets. This bill
juggling excise levy features will
cost the government an estimated
42 million dollars annually in tax
revenue, the revisions are ef
fective next July 1.
3. Raise the national debt limit
to 288 billion dollars, highest in
U.S. peacetime history. That is a
temporary ceiling up five billion
dollars Horn the current tempo
rary one until next June 30. The
new law also hikes the permanent
statutory limit from 275 to 283 bil
lion dollars.

dies with the most promising bank
accounts were romanced personal
ly by the suave con man, who
cheated them out of more than

"Hardest part of the trial was
getting some of those gals to testi
ly, Arterberry recalled. Some
were so infatuated they actually
tried to shield him.
But Arterberry got the- convic
tion, which established a Califor
nia law precedent: Anyone getting
money by a false promise could
be convicted of grand theft.
Arterberry hounded oil swin
dlers in Texas and Arkansas as a
federal prosecutor before joining
the Los Angeles County district
attorney's office in 1932.
He and his wife Imogene plan a
