By VERNON SCOTT HOLLYWOOD (UPI) Clifton Webb, easily the most elegant ac tor in movietown, laments the passing of the grand gesture and stylish living that once was an integral part of being a movie star. Webb stands alone as a vest (weskit, if you wish) wearer in a community that has peeled to T-shirts and blue jeans. "It's not merely clothes that make the man, or the actor." he said, sipping tea during a lunch break at 20th uentury-r ox. t miss a thing called manners. Courtesy and graciousness have gone by the boards in this town I must say, things have become very shirttaily." With a twitch of his refined mustache Webb surveyed his fcl low actors and technicians with a cold eye. "Look at ' that fellow over there," he said, peering over the top of his bifocals. "He's hardly dressed at all. Well, at least his shirt is clean." Webb was decked out in a tweed sports jacket and gray flannels. A white towel tucked around his neck gave him a dash ing appearance. "People are much too casual to day, but I suppose the Edwardians said the same thing about the fol lowing generation. And Lord only knows how the Victorians felt when their era was ebbing," he added ruefully. The graying actor launched into a dissertation on manners, sug gesting that upbringing by parents had gone to pot. He recalled that he was raised in New York, Lon don and Paris. However, Webb was born in plain old Indianapolis. "Perhaps this slovenliness is a product al those people from the & Radio WEDNESDAY . , Luncheon With Jerrlo ! "But I can't understand why it has be come chic to have dirty finger' nails and mossy teeth. 'With all this elegance of mine including three million dollars worth of clothes, my roles have run to baby-sitter parts where my wardrobe consists of $45 suits or some sort of uniform." Currently starring in "The Re markable Mrs. Pennypacker," Webb is again thrown in with a pack of children. In this picture he plays a bigamist with 17 young sters. "There's a great legend about my hating children," he smiled. "While I have no kids of my own," bachelor Webb went on, in obvious relief, "I must say that I bear no grudge toward smallfry. On the contrary, for some reason children love me. It must be be cause I have a very sweet nature. "Even dogs come to me for at tention." Webb attributes this idolatry to his splendid manners. "I must return tp the set," he concluded. "Though I play a big amist who is the head of an en ormous sausage factory, I still maintain an attitude of elegance. And that is a very difficult thing to do." LATEST HORNBLOWER "Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies" is C. S. Forester's latest chapter in the life of Ho ratio Hornblower.
