Enrollment last year was 739. Second oldest school in the system, having been constructed in J 9 1 9, Mills has been added to several times, the most recent being an auditorium structure. James Scott, former Conger principal, was recently named as principal of Mills for the coming school year. PELICAN SCHOOL prepares for the fall invasion of 325 students. Built in 1921, Pelican School's enrollment figures have remained fairly constant over the years. Shown here is a serene picture of a sehoolhouse quietly awaiting the opening day activities of Monday, September 8. Leather Wear Scores A 'Hit' With Students College boys and sirls rely as much on their leather jackets as on their leather-bound notebooks these days (or both meet not only the day-to-day but the extraordi nary demands of college life. Fortunately or unfortunately, both, too, are popular with friends. A new idea among the coeds is a bright-colored leather jacket to match the predominant color of their Bermuda shorts. It may be bolero or hip length, but it will probably have ivy-league detailing such as straps and buckles, nar row lapels, and natural shouldes With the longer models, lucky girls have skinny black leather pants. And, of couse, they go with cashmere and woolen skirts as well as bermudas. Other leather jackets with more feminine detailing such as dolman sleeves, yokes, soft gathers and rolled-back collars are loved for wear over straight-skirted date and afternoon tea dresses. And leather boleros in white, gold or silver are especially popular with college girls for evening wear. Men's jackets may be three- or four-button length with ivy styl ing, or waist-length lumber-jacket versions. They come in both suede and smooth leather in tra ditional tans and browns with an occasional taupe, beige or loden green appearing. And, of course, everyone who drives a convertible or dates somebody who does, wants a leather car coat. These are usual ly lined with shearling or alpaca and often have convertible hoods, and they may be worn up to cov er the head or down as a huge casual collar. Bright red is a newly favored color in car coats for the girls. Popular, too, among the men most likely to succeed sartorially are the full-length, foreign intrigue trench coats, usually of black leather with black leather but tons. They're good for day and night, rain or shine wear and for impressing any coed. Is your teen-ager away from home at school for the first time? How often should you write him? What should you write when he's homesick? What should you do when he forgets to write you? To find the best answers to these questions, Underwood Cor poration recently took an infor mal survey of the opinions of ed ucators and psychiatrists on this subject. Their combined opinions form a recipe for successful home-college correspondence. Most importantly, the experts feel, letters from home should not be the "clinging-vine" or over- sentimental kind.
