The program was set up in 1951 and extended several times. TU 2-1438, K. Falls Fh. 607 Mali By United Press International Farm groups of Humboldt Coun ty gathered in Eureka recently for a strange ceremony, they dedicat ed a memorial to a bug. The grateful ranchers dedicat ed a 24-inch-square bronze plaque in appreciation of the work done by the Klamath weed beetle, a beneficial insect credited with con trolling Klamath weed in much of Northern California. Dr. Byron Shaw, a U.S. De partment of Agriculture official called the beetle a tiny insect that served mankind. He reviewed the history of the damaging Klamath weed, the expensive attempts to control it, and finally in 1946 the introduction of the beetle which preys on the weed. Shaw said that today Klamath weed beetles are established in every county in which Klamath weed Brows. The weed is no long er a pest of importance, forage plants are returning, land values are ruing, ana coouoi expeuui' lures are negligible. Use of ths beetle to control Klamath weed was a pioneering effort towards biological control of other weeds and insect pests in California. Scientists now are study ing other insects and diseases that will attack weeds and insect pests without harming crops and bene ficial insects.
