JULY 2.1. 1953 Peoole Seem Pleased By Iraq Revolt, Says Scribe Bv STAN f ARTKR BAGHDAD (API It took a group of army officers just two hours to overthrow the monarchy and estaolish a republic in Iraq. The army dissidents appear to have been in complete control of the country from the start on .July 14. There may he some hidden opposition to the new regime, hut it is not apparent to a visit just arrived. This was not an uprising by the people, hut they seem pleased by the result. Although the officers of the new regime and the average Iraqi don't like the U.S. intervention in Lebanon and the British landing in Jordan, the chief concern ap pears to be for their own affairs coupled with a desire to be ac cepted by the West as the legiti rraie government of this oil-rich Middle East country. There is great adulation of the United Arab Republic's President Nasser, but there does not seem to be any great desire to join the U.A.R. The revolution was o military operation carried out like clock work. At S a.m. on July 14, one com pany of infantry, supported by a tank and several antitank guns mounted on jeeps, surrounded the royal palace where 23-year-old King Faisal and Crown Prince Abdul Ilah were preparing to leave for a Baghdad Pact meet ing in Istanbul. At the same lime other army tinits surrounded the home of Prime Minister Nuri Said, long the country s political slrong man, and the residences of government Art Students Select Star SAN FRANCISCO (UPO -French actress Brigilte Bardot headed a list of the world's 10 best undressed women drawn up today by a group of art sludenls. The 150 students and 211 faculty members hastened to explain they were not privileged to view the winners in the altogether. What they did was lo use their "trained eyes and artistic imagination. The list was limited lo motion picture actresses because they are known all over (he world. How ever, they pninled out there are several models at the school "who could easily qualify." REAPPOINTED MONTAGUE The reappoint ment of Cline Soule of Montague to the Siskiyou County Advisory Committee of the Farmer's Home Administration was recently dis closed by the organization. The army then brought up an antitank gun and began shelling the stucco-covered brick mansion, setting the interior afire. The royal family fled by a hack door to get to a car and escape. What prevented them from reach ing a car' is not clear, hut instead tr.2y walked up a gravel path to ward the front of the house and the troops. Nor is there any explanation of why the troops started lirmg, hut the family was shot down on the lawn about 20 'eet from a front corner of the palace. Those killed were the King, the crown prince, the crown prince's mother and two sisters, a woman servant and the King's aide. The crown prince's wife was wounded and is reported recovering in a hospital. The crown prince's body was "given lo the people" and muti lated. The olher royal dead were reported buried in unmarked graves. Nuri Said escaped from his house on the Tigris River front as it was being surrounded from three sides. The army believes he crossed to the olher sideof the river in a boat and took refuge in the home of a friend. A servant was paid a reward or 10.000 dinars ($2B,00fli for telling Ihe army the next day Nuri was hiding in the home of his master. All sources report he was dressed as a woman, with a pistol hidden in Ihe folds of the gar ment. Some say he opened tire and killed two persons when he was arrested, others that he did not try to shoot. There is no firm figure on the number killed in the revolution. One official source said "not more than 30." another said "about 14." All but Nuri are reported lo have died on Monday. The dead includ ed three Americans, a Briton and a German -who were killed by a moh after Ihe revolution had been won. The Americans and the Gor an were taken from the leading hotel by troops, then abandoned to the mob. Officer Fears Headlines Saying Marines Under Fire By JACK V.
