Kven if war with Kussia broke out we would be in far better shape for oil supplies than ir World War II when careful ration ing had to be invoked. Responsible government officials gave those assurances today through united Press Interna tional. They said in event all the Mid east's oil 27 per cent of the world's supply were cut off the United Stales would have more than enough gasoline, fuel oil and other vital by-products to fill both domestic and Western Kuropean needs. In case of war with Russia the Eastern Seaboard would be first to sulfer shortages. It is almost entirely dependent on ocean-going lankers to keep lis pipelines filled Tankers are vulnerable to sub marines as apllv demonstrated bv U-boats in World War II. But the government has an ace in the hole. It could pre-empt from preseni owners Ihe Big and Little Inch pipelines running parallel from Texas to Pennsylvania to help keep the Eastern Seaboard sup plied. These lines have a com bined daily capacity of 435,000 barrels of crude oil. They were built during World War II to ease the eastern supply crisis. The government sold them under a "stand-by" clause allow ing It to reclaim them in an em ergency. The Little Inch is now carrying petroleum products. The Rig Inch is carrying natural gas hut could be reconverted to oil swiftly. The rationing lesson learned in world War II also has paid dm dends in oilier areas. The Mideast. for example, is now led by pipe lines Irom Texas, Louisiana, Ok lahoma and Wyoming. None of these existed in the early l!Mlls. The West Coast has its own sup plies and has nothing to worry about. There is more than enough re lincry capacity trom coast to coasl and from Canada to Mexico to meet all emergency gasoline needs. In addition domestic oil production, cut back sharply by inroads of foreign imports, could he stepped up quickly. This was illusl rated by the 1056-57 Suez Canal crisis which forced West ern Europe to 'let (10 per cent of its supplies from Ihe United Stales. The jet warplnne age also has altered the gasoline supply picture for Ihe heller. In World War II there were not jets and military demands for gasoline were trcm endous. Now Ihe military uses jet luel ordinary kerosene at most exclusively. Gasoline must he extracted be- frre the fuel becomes kerosene. Hence every gallon of jet fuel pro duced means more gasoline lor ot her use. Storage tanks currently are bursting with it. There also is an ample supply ol high octane aviation gasoline. Hie military uses this in its trans ports and olhcr conventional planes but now it would prove on ly a small drag on civilian sup plies in an emergency. Domestic crude oil output is now about 8.5110.0111) barrels a day. Full capacily is !). 500.000 barrels.
