Wartime Incident Started Writer On Way To Fame By CYNTHIA LOHRY NEW YORK 'APi-When Harry Junkin. serving in the Royal Ca nadian Air Force, was stationed at Ottawa in 1!I40, he unexpected ly received a leave. With only minutes to catch a plane to Montreal, Junkin tried to telephone his wile about his home comma. He couldn't make the call: the circuits were busy. The incident, however," has turned out to be Junkin's nest ese. "I started thinkinc about the busv circuits and wonderins what a Paraplegic Sent To Cuba NKW YORK (API A parapleg ic who escaped twice with his wheel chair from Welfare Island and spent some of his Iree time at the movies was put on a plane ior LUDa yesterday by tmmigra lion authorities. This was the third time that Luis Oswaldo Lavin-Gardin was deport ed from the United States. He en tered the country illegally three times. Two immigration officers to whom he. surrendered in mid Manhattan yesterday went with him to Idlewild Airport. The offi cers took no chances, and mained at the airport until the plane left. Last Wednesday an immigration officer went to Bird S. Coler Me morial Hospital on Welfare Island to take Lavin-Gardin into custody He had escaped. On Thursday the fugitive was picked up by a federal agent and returned to the hospital. The next day he escaped again. Lavin-Gardin told the inspectors he had outside help in making both escapes. He is a paraplegic as the result of having been shot by a slate trooper six months ago while resisting arrest. Lavin-Gardin said he was taken to the home of a friend Wednesday and visited two moving picture theaters. person would do if the message were a matter of life and death, he said. "And then I sat down and wrote 'Long Distance." " And "Long ' Distance" has turned out to be a broadcasting classic. It was first performed on radio by the Canadian Broadcast ing Co. in 19-tl iJunkin was a CBC writer). It was repeated by CBC in 1943. lfMS and 1947. It was played by the Australian Broad casting Co. in 1946. and done by the British Broadcasting Corp. in 1947. In 1948 Junkin got a job with NBC radio in New York. "Long Distance" was his first show and it was such a popular success it was repeated three months later In 1950 it turned up on televi sion, as The Clock, three years later Miriam Hopkins did it on Viedo Theater and it was repeat ed the next year. It was used in Canada, France, Switzerland and Germany. Now it is coming up again on July 25 on the Playhouse of Stars. This time Jessica Tandy is the heroine and it is a filmed show. In all, "Long Distance" has been played about 20 times each time Junkin reaps new financial rewards and thus has established some sort of a record, if only by the translation into African for Durban and Capetown listeners. It is a suspense story, showing the mounting tension as the wife of a man scheduled for execution attempts to get through a tele phone call about newly discov ered evidence and finds the cir cuits busy. Junkin himself has gone on to become one of television's busiest free-lance writers, turning out scripts for all the top live dramat ic shows and many of the series and serials.
