Carolyn Edele Nicholas. .10, of Newport, was killed Sunday niuhl in a two-car accident on U.S. nil north of Newport, a quarter-mile north of Whale Cove. Slate police said two other persons were in jured seriously. Their names were not learned at once. Warren Duanc Cassal, .11, Pilot Rock, died in a spectacular one car crash early Sunday at Pilot Rock. State police said his car failed to make a turn as it sped down a hill inlo town. The speed ing automobile smashed into a truck and then careened inlo a nearby service station, crashing through locked doors inlo the lub . rication room. Two violent collisions Salurdav killed four persons, two in each crash, a few miles apart east of roruana. Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Sinclair of Portland were killed outright when their car was involved in a three-car collision on Ihe Colum bia River Highway. Two of Ihe couple's young sons in their car were slightly injured. Later, a head-on collision nol far away on the Banfield Express way killed Robert Bangs, 38, of Beaverion. and Emma Williams, about 30. Portland. Mrs. Jack Davis, about 45. who lived on a ranch near lleppner, was killed when a pickup truck plunged down a 40-foot bank near Heppner. Eugenia Maria Valverde, 17 - year-old Costa Riean lovely who disqualified herself because she was too young under pageant rules, also was in Ihe parade. but not as a contestant. Pageant officials planned lo pre sent her with a special trophy for her honesly. After Miss United States is chosen Wednesday night. The judg ing will move into the selection of Miss Universe, who will receive $11,000 in cash, a 1II5H convertible and have her expenses paid for year. The finals will bo Friday night when Miss Universe will he named. She will be feted at a ball on Saturday. The Republican slate central commillec supported Adams by relusing 21-15 to pass a motion lo censure him. Adams has been under heavy fire for accepting gifls from old friend Bernard (ioldfine, a million aire Boslon industrialist. An hour-long debate preceded Ihe vote. Ihe last major Item of business as OOP leaders finished two days of pep talks at Salem for the November election cam paign. Slale chairman James Short was reelected unanimously. The Democratic Slale Central Commillec censured Adams at a Portland meeting. The committee members re elected David Epps of Sweel Home as slale chairman. Kpps had nn opposition. Other officers also were elected without opposi lion. Slate Rep. Beulah Hand, Mil waukic, was named .vice chair man, and Raker County Judge I.loyd Rea and reelected secre tary. Mrs. Irma I.indquist. CITY BRIEFS Interim Committee Scores Migrant Worker Handling PORTLAND AP) An Oregon legislative interim committee was toW Saturday that migrant farm workers in the state are being mistreated and exploited. The charges were made in a series of detailed studies by state agencies. The studies were by the state Bureau of Labor. This report said there appears to be a ring of Mexican-American labor contractors which deals in mari juana and prostitution for the farm workers. The report said some contrac tors cheated the laborers by mark quested by the Interim Committee ing up housing rentals, charging on Migratory Labor. Some of the most spectacular charges were made in fl report Moonwatcher Out Of Funds PORTLAND (API Robert Roardwell, director of the local mooowatcb observation team, said Sunday he was "not going to quit completely" and slop watching satellites. Earlier Bnardwcll had said the moonwalchcrs would have to dis band for lack of funds. Sunday he said he would "have to mark time until he had the finances to repair equipment out of adjust ment. He said stopwatches, a tape recorder and other gear used in tracking the satellites are all out of adjustment high prices for transportation, and paying workers less than the con tract wage That is only 1 per cent of the slate's total assistance expendi tures. Some 1,50ft migrant families got help, but 40 per cent of these families were on the relief rolls for one month only. The state Board of Health Sur vey reviewed health and hygiene problems of the migrant workers. Ihe report said sewage disposal Of the 199 camps checked, II were reported in good condition, 53 in fair condition, and 32 in poor condition. The interim committee has tak en no action on the surveys. The report concluded with the statement that "there can be little doubt that the present con tractors are a factor in suppress ing the progress of the Spanish American migrant farm worker toward full and responsible citi zenship and Americanization." A survey report on farm labor transportation told of workers being moved about in defective buses and trucks. The report said that of buses checked, 13 per cent had poor foot brakes and 22 per cent poor hand brakes. The foot brakes on 5 per cent of the trucks were defective and t h e hand brakes were bad on 32 per cent.
