Pat is the husky, handsome, 18-year-old son of John Wayne, and a 'teen-age idol in his own right. No hothouse Hollywood kid is he. Pal has been reared in a normal Los Angeles neighborhood by his mother, long divorced from the actor. Commenting on his Contempo raries, Pat opined: "If a kid is left to himself, he'd never get in trouble. It s only when you get with a bunch of other fellows that you start smoking and cutting up. Then each one tries to outdo Ihe other, - and" sometimes there is real trouble. . "But I don't think this genera tion is any different from other ones. We all do some crazy things. Like sneaking into thea ters." This struck a responsive chord. As a lad, 1 sneaked into the same movie houses. Even got caught once. "I only got caught once," Pat remarked. "That was when we sneaked into the Pan-Pacific to see the Harlem Globetrotters play basketball. One of our buddies got caught, so we all gave ourselves up. The police took us away, but then they let us go." Pat added that such experi ences have made him more con servative. He realizes that ihe fact he is John Wayne's son could provide headlines from even a minor brush with the law. He recalled that he took up smoking and fast cars in his ear lier years, even raced a car to !5 m p h. on a desert road. Now the thought of it scares him. He drives a fairly sedate station wagon and smokes an occasion al cigar. I Pat was asked if be thought I rock V roll contributed to delin quency. "Some of it is pretty wild," he commented. "I can see how listen ing to such music might fan the flames and help send a bunch of kids into trouble. But 1 don't think rock V roll is the cau.se. Some kids are going to get into trouble anyway. Pat himself admires some rock V roll "I like to listen to Elvis Presley, not watch him"), and he's going to contribute to the craze. He made a film for the "Mr. Adams and Eve" TV show to plug his latest movie, "The toung Land. On the show he plays a pop singer. The question arose: Why not become one? So he cut four records, one of which he'll sing on the TV show next week. Pat just finished his freshman year as a pre-med student at Loyola University here. This sum mer he'll help plug "The Young Land" and perhaps make another film for C. V. W hitney Produc tions. He has a dream contract which pays him the year around, yo he works only in the summer. "I'm going to finish college," he said. "My father wants me to. Besides, I want to have a line of work in case I don't make the grade in movies." PILOT'S FACE DECISION TERNHILL.
