Milton Gerlicher, assistant man ager for the corporation, had as serted that the McCloud Townsite and buildings, where 1.140 em ployes of the company live, "must he maintained as a source of la bor." The assistant manager also pointed out that the rent on houses in McCloud, which aver age $29 per month, are subject to negotiation with the union. Ger licher also claimed large losses by the company both on opera tion of the townsite and on log ging camps at Pondosa and Kin yon. County Assessor L. D. (Babe) Taylor, defending the increase, termed the moderate rents charged in McCloud "an incentive for workers to stay on their jobs" and said he objected lo the com pany owned residences being counted as a loss item. Most of the increase, $384,260,' was for residences and buildings in McCloud. Assessed valuations on residences and buildings in the company's Kinyon and Pondosa logging camps were also increased by $.iO,650. (API-A visi tor was so intent on getting a nickel in a parking meter that he left a satchel full of gold and sil ver coins worth $5,000 on the side walk.
