Lee had just returned to work for the Modoc Forest Service at the Buck Creek Ranger Station. He will be hospitalized for at least three months more his physician informed his family. Annual Swim School To Start MOUNT SHASTA Jack Murtha. Mount Shasta recreational direc tor, has announced that the annu al swimming school conducted by the recreational department Will Degin Monday, August 4. All lessons will be given in the Dunsmuir plunge. Murtha is lining up assistants to provide personal instructions for swimmers who need them. Among these signed to instruct is Michael ' Mike) Clark, a recent arrival from Sacramento. Clark, a high school junior is an aquatic star who spe cializes in both high and low div ing, and speed swimming. The school will end Saturday, August lfi, with a water carnival. JC ; Picnic Marks Close Of Church Birthday Fete By ORA DEMICK ALTURAS -The five-day cele bration in recognition of the be ginning of permanent religious work in Alturas and western Mo doc County 75 years ago by the First Congregational Church o( Alturas and the First Baptist Church of Alturas 50 years ago i the two churches merged in 194B into the Alturas Federated Church' closed Sunday afternoon. July 13, with a picnic on the church lawn. Awards for distinguished serv ice to religion in Modoc County were presented to the Rev. Mi chael Prioulx of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church; the Rev. Ralph Conard, who served the larger parish with his headquarters at Cedarville: Mrs. Cora Hafer and Nora Ballard, . Baptist workers: Mrs. C. E. Robison and Mrs. Kiln C. Sloss, Congregational workers; Joseph Steele of Adin, Congrega tional worker; descendants of the Dorris family who founded the Baptist Church: descendants of the Flournoy family and the Estcs family, co-founders of the Congre gational Church. Presentation of awards was made by George Roy all,' moderator of the Federated Church, to Mrs. Katherine Dorris Mathews. Harry Flournoy and Mrs. Effie Estes Kauffman (or their respective families and to all others in person. Dr. William Moll Case of San Jose who served the church from 11146 to 1950 gave the closing ad-J dross. Guest minister at the Sunday morning service was Dr. Mack McCray, Reno, Nevada, executive secretary or the Nevada-Sierra Baptist Convention. Guest soloist was Norville Moyer of Burlingame, former Alturas resident. He was accompanied by Richard Rusyn at the Elma Dorris memorial organ. A pageant portraying life in Mo doc from frontier days until the federation of the Congregational and Baptist churches was given Saturday evening on the football field of Modoc Union High School, under the direction of Mrs. R Marcy Sloss. The material for the aulhentic scenes of yesteryear written by Mrs. Sloss was the re sult of research done by Mrs. Le- Roy Smith of Berkeley, mother of the Rev. Roger Smith of Cedar ville. An old-fashioned Ice cream so cial on the church lawn Friday night preceded the evening serv ice, which was also held on tha lawn. From San Francisco cams Dr. William David Pratt, iuperin tendent of the Northern California Congregational Conference, to speak. Thursday night was proclaimed 'Interdenominational Night" and featured Dr. Loyal Lincoln Wirt of Claremont, California. 95-year-old preacher and author. Dr. Wirt told of some of his experiences as circuit-riding preacher 70 years be fore. He established churches and Sunday schools wherever he went. The opening service of the cele bration was held in the nriginil edifice built by the Congregational Church in Alturas, now occupied by the Church of Christ. Four prominent people shared the rostrum on this memorable night, the diamond anniversary of the founding of the Congregational Church in Alturas. Mrs. Ella C. Sloss told the history of that church, written by her for the' occasion. Dr. D. Rockwell Hunt, famous California historian associated with the College of the Pacific at Stock ton, California, who was in the area in the interest of the Con ference of California Historical So cieties, was persuaded to slay over for the event and address the celebrants. Dr. William H. Young man, pastor of the church from 1916 until 1918, came from. Santa Rosa, California, and for the oc casion donned the Prince Albert pulpit coat he wore in those years. The other speaker was the Rev. harl E. Olson, pastor of the Fed erated Church. At the close of the evening serv ice on July 9, a reception was hold in the parlors of the Church of Christ. The birthday anniversary cake or the Congregational Church was given by the Modoc County Historical Society and the follow, ing members presided: Mrs. Rob ert Dorris served the cake after the first slice was cut hy Mrs. C. E. Rohison with the aid of the Rev. William H. Youngman; Ger trude James served punch and cof fee was poured by Mrs. Warren M. Sloss. Independence, Missouri, home town of President Harry S.
