It's called "priva.onim," and com bines the luxury of privalc baths with the possibility ol realization on a less than munificent budget. The idea of such an arrange ment tor general family use may come somewhat as a shock, but re call: There are qtiite a few folks still around who can tell you what a luxury indoor bathing facilities were not too many years ago, And any homemnker who has had to arbitrate (he red hot sub ject of hath priority will welcome even the hoinninis of a solution to filling two adults and several school bound children into the bath- intj area. The brain child of the plumb tng industry initially, it was first tried in Miami, Florida, within he framework of a standard house plan. It is now being planned for con ill notion in several other stales Hero's how it works: As shown In sketch, a common bath-shower is shared by two rooms. Each room, however, has its own lavatory, toilet, dressing area and closet facilities. Such centering ' of bathing dressing-grooming facilities gives more room for living. Storage goes into (he dressing area, leaving more room in the bedroom. The bedroom becomes, in other than sleeping hours, a place for re taxation. There's room for reading, writ big, radio or TV enjoyment. ' In effect, the design provides for overai UluwU of quiet to which members of the family can retreat for rest and relaxation. Coslwiso, especially in new con struction, piping and plumbing is centered in two areas with a con sequent1 saving over plumbing in a four bath home, for example. fc'limination of two tubs and two showers which would be necessary in the case of separate baths for each reduces cost measurably. This is dream stuff for many of us, right now. But it is an in triguing peek at what we can ex pect in many homes on a not-too-distant tomorrow. New Wailpaper And Pictures Stepping out this year is a new twosome wallpaper and pictures. The reason: many new wallpapers are getting the textured treatment According to Mrs. Mary L Brandt, one of New York's deco rating authorities, they're a per feet background for heautiful etch PI arming Wall; Do you want a beautiful wood paneled wall with an exquisite pat' tern ot contrasting grain and tex ture? Then, here's an idea. Cut your panel hoards to exactly fit the wall. Then, lay them out on the floor and carefully select each hoard so that you have the ideal combination of contrasting boards next to each other. For best re sults, you may wish to finish the panel boards before installing. If you use such lovely, tawnv-toned woods as western red cedar or Douglas fir. you can use clear lacquers or varnishes to retain their lovely, golden colors. Rougher The Better For the man who doesn't like to paint his house any oftener than necessary, rough-sawn siding is the answer. It holds paint or stain about twice as long -is planed wood. By MR. FIX Distributed by NEA Service You might think that with all of the portable power in the market circular saws, jig saws and spe cial saw attachments for electric drills that the hand saw had gone out of style. Well, it hasn't. Tackle a warm weather chore a good distance from the house and source of pow er and you'll be glad to have this standard old-fashioned cutting tool in your shop. Of course, if you're tackling something as big as constructing a garage or porch, rent, buy or borrow a power unit and get some one to show you how to use it. But for building the kids a sandbox, or when repairing some tairs or even cutting tomato stakes, a hand saw will do all you want it to do and perhaps do it more accurately. The basic saw for every handy man is the wood-cutting hand saw. It s generally 20 or 24 inches long i26 inches is preferred), it has a wide, tapered, metal blade, wood handle and differs widely as the number of teeth per inch and their set. Number of teeth per inch is the method by winch saws are classi fied, generally. Classification is known as the "point" system. Thus, a 12-point saw is one that has 12 teelh to the inch. Rip saws have four-to five-and- one-half teeth per inch. They'rej used for cutting with the grain ol the wood, and make a coarse cut. The crosscut saw, used for cul ling across the groin of the wood, has from six to 12 teelh per inch, and gives a fairly fine cut. For the handy man who is jusl beginning to equip his shop, the first, basic saw is an eight-point crosscut sow. It will give a moder ately fine cut and is versatile enough so that it will handle rip ping jobs he's likely to encounter. Keep the saw clean and dry. Give it a light wiping with ma chine oil after use. or protect it with an oxidation-resistant polish. Some authorities suggest that you oil or paralfin the sides of the blade use oil when sawing green wood, paraffin on lumber that you may want to finish if a particular piece of wood gives you trouble. After the saw has been in use for some lime the "set" of the teeth may need restoring. The set refers to the amount each tooth is bent alternately left and right away from the saw blade. There are toolh-setling tools in the market that will restore the set. If you lack time or patience to do this exacting job. you'd bet lei have it done professionally. In addition to the hand saw. equip yourself with one of those utility saws with a pistol-grip han dle and interchangeable blades. It's shaped like a keyhole saw but is smaller in size. With it you can do much of the work performed by' the keyhole or compass saw interior cutouts, curves and the hack saw. , If you figure on doing much met al cutting, adding or replacing plumbing for example, get a regu lar hack saw. For cutting curves and circles, get a coping saw. You'll find a wide variety of blades for the latter two saws, in bolh fine and coarse cut. As a blade becomes dull, re place it. ' With the proper saw you'll do any job better. And you won't be dependent on a power source when tackling the smaller jobs. Q What is the correct angle at which to saw? M. P. A With the regular wood saw. about 45 degrees to face of work when crosscutting; about 60 de- grees when ripping. RODE A HORSE ROANOKE, Va. Wl Mrs. Vir inia B. What's so wonderful about these textured effects? They are easy on the eyes, give the wall a warm colorful covering, conceal possible defects in the wall, and create a soft neutral background for a favorite picture. In the photo above, note the un usual treatment for showing off a series of handsome Hogarth etchings. The background is a silken-textured wallpaper with the look and richness of a fine silken weave. The excitement in this par ticular paper is its cloud-like col oringsblue gray with undertones of pink. Ceiling is pink to belnd in with one of the textured "threads" (see inset closeup) giv ing a glowing pink skv to this beautiful foyer-dining area. I his year, says Mrs. Brandt, "the coarser weaves in textured wall papers are giving way to the more finely woven look, to ap pear like closely knit threads in costly linens. Some have the soft nurrinff look of velvet, others the smooth silky eel of luscious fabrics from the Orient. There is a strong trend toward the "rubbed effect. ' nrl toneon tone. similar to the old Chinese rubbings, to get a mot tled look or batik In wallpapers, as in all home furnishings, the new trend is toward the opulent look."
