Tranquilizers Are Going To The Docs! Continued from page II A Moose For Your Living Room bite anything, including its own mate and the hand that feeds it. Pill-happy mink are much easier to handle. Snakes have one trait in common with human beings they lose their appetite when people are around, just as people lose theirs when snakes are around. And a bit of tranquilizer works wonders on the snake. He tends to enjoy his meals instead of starving to death. Cows are popularly supposed to be contented, but they're certainly not when first subjected to the milking machine. In fact they're apt to kick the equipment to pieces! Not so with tranquilized cows they just stand there and let industrial progress run its course. A tranquilizer called Trilafon has recently been passed by the Food and Drug Administration for use in transporting beef cattle. They lose less weight and enjoy the trip more. A bit of tranquilizer in turkey ration prevents turkeys from trampling one another in their senseless rushes hither and yon, and also keeps them from losing weight when shipped to market. On the other hand, travelling got in the way of one baby seal at the Coney Island Aquarium in New York City recently. His inborn urge to migrate was much stronger than most seals', and he swam constantly. Afraid he would die of exhaustion. Aquarium officials fed him a tranquilizer. He calmed down right away. Finally we come to plants. Would you like a few tranquilized lima beans with that Thanksgiving dinner? Science will provide them or give you tomatoes if you prefer them. A new spray called Duraset claims to pro tect buds against the stress of extreme cold and heat, which are the main things buds have to worry about. Recent tests have shown as much as a 90 per cent increased yield in lima beans and also large increases in tomatoes and several other edible plants. Duraset is not chemically related to the happy pills used by man and beast, so its classification as a tran quilizer may be open to argument. What lies ahead in tranquilizing? The most fasci nating possibility is suggested by a report of The New York Academy of Sciences. It says experiments have proved that tranquilizers control "avoidance behavior" in waterfowl avoidance behavior being their tendency to try to get away if you try to catch them. Now, if tranquilizers will work on wild birds, the most skittish of creatures, just think what horizons are opened up to the pet lovers of America. No longer will they be limited to mere dogs and cats they may be able to tame hawks, crows, sparrows, robins, not to mention raccoons, wildcats, fox and skunks, which have much less avoidance behavior than birds'. Pills For All Animals This is not a pipe dream. Veterinarians generally smile at the idea but they admit that it is quite possible. The pills work on large beasts as well as small, so it is conceivable that moose, bear, bison and alligators may someday be roving your neighborhood, each with a suitable collar and license. And there could be a few exotics thrown in, such as camels, ostriches and tigers. I I am looking forward to such a development with keen interest but also with one eye on my goat's bottle of tranquilizers. The day may come when I'll need them worse than she does!
