A wealher reconnaissance plane exploded high over Tucumcari Wednesday and fell in flaming bits. The pilot was killed. Col. John Swaffort of Laughlin Air Force Base. Del Rio, Tex said excess speed might have been the reason for the explosion of the U2 jet aircraft. The plane crashed after fire broke out in the cockpit, Swaffort said. Only 24 hours earlier, another U2 crashed east of Amarillo, also killing the pilot. The 40R0th Stra tegic Reconnaissance Wing at Laughlin has grounded all U2s pending an inquiry.
