Mrs. Giuntoni'. receipt of two checks on the same day is the first such incident in the administration's five western states operation, and may be the first in the nation. Fischer will steer the last child onto a camp train, comfort the last sohbine parent and heave the proverbial sigh of relief. These last seven days have been times to try trainmen's souls, even the soul of a man practiced as Fischer is in the art cf handling children by the car load. Tischer is stationmasler at Grand Central Terminal, depar ture point for camp each year at this time for 35.000 children, ranging in age from four to IS. "Some of them are so small, the camo ieader strings them all together on a rope, like wash on a line.'' said Fischer, who has been working out the transporta lion logistics since 1IM7. "Rut we've never lost a child,' he said. "And only a few of the kids ever miss trains. Then it's the parents fault; they didn t get up early enough. This job would he a cinch if it were just the children to han dle. But the parents and other rel atives double the work, tach par ent thinks his child is the only one in the world. . .the parents spend a whole week kissing the kids goodbye. Fischer, a grandfather ot seven children, said ttiat on some days as many as R.ono children hoard trains for camps in the Adiron ilacks, the Berkshirrs, and New England in general. "No other terminal in the coun try handles anything like that number." said Fischer. Fischer and his staff start gearing for the June crush two months in advance deciding which euard shall be stationed where, the location of placards indicating the rendezvous' point for each of the 330 camps, and how many extra trains and cars are needed. Come August, the whole process is repeated as the children return. "Then." said rischer, we nave other thincs to contend with Misnlaced frogs, mice, turtles and fish. Kids collect the darn- dest things. Rut they all come hack looking healthier than when thev left, so we are happy. Fischer has been with the New- York Central Railroad since 1909 and in charge of camp trains sinre 1947. (UPD The body of the world's fattest man. Robert Hughes. 32, who weiehed more than half a ton, wi be buried Saturday in a specially constructed casket Hughes died Thursday in his trailer parked outside a Rremen. Ind., hospital. He was too huge to fit inside the hospital. Hughes, who weighed about 1.041 pounds at death, was strick en with the measles while tour ing Indiana with the Gooding Brothers Amusement Co. carnival. He lay outside the hospital for a week in his converted and rein forced truck trailer home while doctors cured him of his measles. However, the illness affected his huge heart, estimated to be as large as that of a 1,000-pound steer, and death was attributed to the heart condition and uremia. The body will be placed in an outsized casket 4 feel wide and 6 feel. 6 inches long. Burial will be in Renville Cemetery, 12 miles south of here. Hughes supported his bulk on a ix-foot frame. At his peak, he nan. but makes up lor mis ny native common sense, industrious ness and experience. He is well suited to conducting the long and often exasperating talks which are his lot in his present post. Thompson, born in Las Animas. Colorado. Aueust 24. 1904 was grad uated from the University of Colo rado in 192S and entered the For eicn Service the next year. His first assignment was in Ceylon followed in 1933 by a post in the U.S. Consulate in Geneva which at that time was the seat of the League of Nations. RUSSIA IN 1940 In 1940, Thompson was trans ferred to a minor post in Ihe Mos cow Embassy. Four years there gave him a working knowledge ot Russian but he is not a fluent linguist. When the diplomatic corps fled Moscow for the Volga in October, 1941, as the Germans menaced the capital, he remained behind and risked possible capture to look after American interests. After his first Moscow service, rhompson was assigned to Lon don. Washington and Rome. A big break for him came in 1952 when President Truman ap pointed him high commissioner in occupied Austria, a posl in which he was to achieve two outstand ing successes which marked him for metier things He and a British diplomat skill fully persuaded the "Italians and Yugoslavs lo accept a partition ol the city and port of Trieste and thus settled thai thorny post-war issue. AUSTRIAN TREATY He then was assigned lo work with the British and French lo negotiate with the Russians an in dependence treaty for Austria a I labor which culminated in unusual success. Thompson moved from1 Vienna to Moscow in mid 1957, succeeding Charles F:. Bnhlen. Within a short time, in December, 1957, the Rus sians began In urge a summit con terence and ever since Thompson has been engaged in negotiations on that subject. Thompson is regarded as par ticularly well-qualified for the te dious and cautious job of trying to work out such arrangements with the Russians. He is a good re norlcr and tenacious negotiator. Thompson married Mrs. Jane Monroe Goelet in 1948. They have two daughters. Jenny and Sherry.
