Well, his young team is up there a mere one-half game out of first place as it starts the second half season. The Giants, a team nobody figured was going anywhere, play their 78th Rame tonight against Cincinnati. They'll be going after victory No. 42. Cincinnati, in this first of a two-game set, will he aiming to hand out defeat No. 37 Rigney sends Icfly Mike Mc Cormick, a 19-ycar-nld with a 5-1 record, against a Redlcgs snuad only 3'i games behind first place Milwaukee but in sixth place. Bob Purkey, 8-4. is Manager Birdie Tebbells choice to oppose Mc-Cormick. McCormick heat Cincinnati 4-2 on May 20 but lasted only 5 2-3 innings June 20 when the Giants lost to the liedlegs 8-2. He was not charged with the loss then but he did give up seven hits ad two runs. Purkey beat San Francisco wilh a six-hitler 3-0 June 0. That was his only appearance against the Giants. The two teams arc even at 5 victories each this season. The hometnwners. with the ex ception of Willie Mays, southpaw Johnny Antonelli and catcher Bob Schmidt, had a three-day rest thanks to the All Star Game. Rigney claims the layoff is just what his Eang needed. "The kids are tired," he said. "The grind has been terrific." He declared his two South American pitchers, Ruben Gome. and Ramon Monzant, needed the rest the mosl. Gomez had marie only two starts since June 17, Mnnzant only one since June 14. "They've pitched all year last year in this league and the winter in the Winter League." Rigney said. "They've lost their sharp ness and maybe the All Star break will revive them." With but half the season history, the Giants already have proved themselves at the box office. Last year the total at the Polo Grounds in New York was 653.923 paid admissions. The Giants should hit that fig ure in Seals Sladitim. capacity 23,400, before this week is out. While Bob's Union Service wa busy swamping Hal's Sport Shoi 24-2 on Diamond 1 at Wright Field Wednesday night, Johns-Manville and Park-Moyina battled back and forth for most of seven innings before the game was called on ac count of darkness, on Diamond 2 The J M-Park test reverted back to the end of the sixth and an 8-8 tie, thus creating another of the "deep freeze" Little League game situations. Park-Moyina and Johns-Manville will pick up where they left off: the same score, lineups, etc., when they finish the game as a prelude to their next regularly scheduled meeting. The situation marks the second time the J-M nine has fig ured in an unfinished game. The Bobs-Hal's hassle saw the Sport Shop nine commit nine er rors in two innings, the third and fourth, to count 14 runs although Ihey managed to collect only 10 hits over the six inning distance. Charged with the loss for Hal's was Tim Bailey who worked four innings and gave up seven hits which included a double and two trfples by Kim Coon. He was re lieved by Mike Kitching who al lowed only three safeties but is sued innumerable free passes Rob's scored seven times in the fifth canto, primarily on walks. The winner, Macky Cunningham allowed two hits, walked only three men and struckout 12. Both hits came in the fourth frame; a sin gle followed by a triple by Kitch ing was responsible for the Hal's scores. The only other extra base blow of the test was a triple by Bob's Bon Ncaly. In the J-M. Park game, pitchers Eddie Weaver of Johns-Manville and Ronnie Yunck of P-M matched eflorts for the full six innings with Weaver getting the best of it as he allowed only three hits. Yunck gave up seven blows but walked fewer batters. Both were replaced in the top of the seventh, accord ing to league rules, but their re lievers efforts did not count since the inning was unfinished.
