Barn Destroyed By Grass Fire MONTAGUE A brush and grass ire started by a Siskiyou County oad grader on the three-mile lane ml of Montague destroyed a ham ind outbuildings on an unoccupied arm Wednesday. Charles Phillips, operator of the ;rader, reported the fire to the Vlontague Fire Department, which ient two trucks, and to the U.S. forest Service, who had three rucks at the scene. The grass burned to the house. owned by Castle E. Stewart, of Southern California, but did not destroy it. There is no estimate of lite damage from the barn and outbuildings, which were burned to the ground. This was the second fire started by the grader on Wednesday, but the first was put out by Phillips. The forest service trucks were standing by to see that no dor mant sparks would start another fire. Letter Clarifies Police Position DORRIS Byard Kelly, Dorris police chief, received a letter Mon day from the office of the attorney general of California which cleared up a controversial point of law for all California police departments. A recent ruling, handed down by the Attorney General, Edmund G. Pat) Brown, relative to jurisdict ion and powers of a policeman be yond the territorial limits of his municipality, states that not onlv does a policeman have the power to arrest beyond his municipality, nut nas a duty to arrest under con ditions specified in Section 836 Pen al Code. The need for protecting officers' benefits in case of injury or death in such situations assumes greater importance than ever before. Prints Foil Applicant KANSAS Cm' lAP)The Po lice Department recently sot authorization to hire an additional 100 patrolmen. In its search for applicants, ihc department painted bright red signs on its white patrol cars ad vertising the johs. Among others, the sign at tracted 26-year-old John Scott Timmons, a 220-pound ex-insurance salesman. Yesterday, two policemen and .in FBI agent picked un Timmons at his hotel room. The FBI said it had been looking for him since May 11, 1957, on a charge of deserting the Marine Corps at San Diego. A check of Timmons finger prints, taken as a matter of routine when he applied for the policeman's job, gave him away. Father-To-Be Aids Capture KAUFMAN. Tex. (AP)-Lt. W.! H. Bowman of the federal cor rectional institution at Seacovillc. Tex., was rushing his expectant wife to a hospital early yesterday. Speeding along the highway, he noticed two men beside the road who looked like a pair who excaped from the minimum se curity prison early Sunday. After depositing his wife at the hospital, he called the prison. Lt. Wood Beasley and Clyde Haxem went into action and soon picked up the pair. The men: James Morrison, San Angelo, Tex., and Jose Acosta Jr., McAIlen, Tex., told FBI agents they had been hiding out without food since they escaped. Day Of Flood Still Mystery BAGHDAD (AP)-The date of Noah's flood still is a mystery. That is the conclusion of a team of German archaeologists who have completed two years of ex cavations in southern Iraq. They have been working in Uruk, wher nearly 5.0(10 years aco a Sumerian epic poem was written describing a flood. The hero of the epic was Gil- fiemish, a kins who reigned in Uruk around 2800 B.C. Dr. Hein rich Lenzen, head of the Baghdad German Archaeological ' Institute, says the date of Gilgemish's reign has' been fixed almost exactly; but the date of the flood remains a mystery. Lenzen explained that Gilgem ish, in the poem, actually hears of the flood from an ancestor. The problem is to find out when this ancestor lived and when ha built his ark. His story is so sim ilar to Noah's that they probably refer to the same event. Stroller Finds Traveler Checks SALT LAKE CITY (AP) Joseph C. Johnson was strolling down the street thinking about his recent spinal surgery when ha saw a wallet on the sidewalk.
