posal aimed at ending the ne-week-old
strike of the American
Newspaper Guild against the
morning Inquirer goes before the
Guild memhershin tndav
Negotiators for the Guild and
me inquirer agreed on me pro
posal yesterday after 10 days of
subcommittee meetings, federal
negotiators said.

announced. Neither of the parties
involved would comment.
Federal mediators released the
following announcement: "Out of

for the past 10 days, there has de
veloped a proposal ot a seitiement
of a strike by the Newspaper
Guild of Greater Philadelphia
against the Inquirer.
"This proposal will he presented
to the membership Monday, July
7, at 2 p. m."
Robert Dnnnahoo, chief federal
mediator, later issued a state
ment amending the first an
nouncement to read that the pro
posal would bb "presented for the
action of the membership."
If the Guild votes In arrent (hp
proposal and end the strike, nor
mal distribution of the city's two
major newspaper would be re
lumed. The Inquirer Guild unit, repre
senting some 700 editorial and
clerical workers, struck the news
paper June 1 when Us contract
expired.
The dispute reportedly was over
wages and a job security clause
in the contract.
Truck drivers of the Inquirer
and the evening Bulletin, who are
members of Teamsters Local H28.
have not resumed delivery of
either paper.
Both Teamsters units went on

tribution of the two Philadelphia

But the Inquirer truckers agreed
not to cross the Guild picket line
The Bulletin does not have a Guild
unit.
Bulletin drivers were restored to
the company payroll, hut were or
dered not to distribute papers.
The publishers said the agreement
provided that distribution would
resume only when the truck
drivers returned to work at both
papers at the same time.
Meanwhile, both papers contin
ue to pubsh daily and Sunday
edition selling them across the
counters' at their plants.
