JULY 6. 1958 1 Doublehead Crew Job Filled Says Ranger Chief TULELAKE All fire crew posl tlom on (he Doublehead Ranger District, Modoc National Forest, have been filled for the present season and their training is pro gressing rapidly, according to Elmo A. Brough, district ranger here. Kir control manning on the Dou blehead consists of two suppression crews of three meti each, two pre vention firemen, an equipment op erator and a swamper in addition to Brough, Ted Moore, assistant ranger and Henry Bunstein, fire control assistant. Winnie Bunstein is the Tulelake clerk-dispatcher, The lookout on Timber Mountain is Sally Mullens and her husband Homer Mullens is the prevention fireman for the surrounding area. Already Mrs. Mullens has discov ered three fires to which crews have been dispatched. These fires were all controlled at small size. Jerry Chapman is the Dry Lake Guard Station crew foreman, while Tom Procter, Tulelake, and Ross Christensen. Levan, Utah, are the fire tank truck operators. As equip ment operator Don Clark will run the TD-9 bulldozer. Wally Ballow, Levan, Utah, will be the swamper. The Quarantine Station foreman is Ferl Barnfield. Fire tank truck operators are Grant Taylor, Levan, Utah, and Harold Stewart, Tule lake. At Medicine Lake, Everett Hart, Klamath Fa's, will be in charge of recreation a .'tivities. Bob Simon, Newell, will be Medicine Lake pre vention fireman and will assist in campground maintenance. The road to Medicine Lake is now open and an increasing flow of visitors is ex pected there as the weather im proves. "Although there has been some rain during the last few weeks, most of the precipitation has been very spotty and some areas of the forest and rangeiand are very dry," Ranger Brough warns. Since the Nation al Forests belong to all the peo ple," he adds, "it is up to all the people to do all they can to prevent destructive fires." 'Hobo Hike' Scheduled A "hobo hike" will be sponsored by the Recreation Department July 10. 10 a.m., leaving from Vet erans Memorial Park. Youngsters 10 and over are In vited to participate in the hike to Moore Park. They should bring a sack lunch. In order to be real hoboes, a stick and handkerchief to carry over the shoulder should also be brought. The hike will be supervised by Ella Redkey of the Recreation De partment. Children going are urged to reg ister in advance at the various city play centers. The hike will terminate back at Veterans Memorial Park at about 3 p.m. Parents are asked to pro vide transportation to and from Veterans Park for the children. Longfellow's of Redding is purchasing the furniture store as a Southern Siskiyou County outlet. Frank Gillcy of Redding is mov ing to Dunsmuir to take over as manager. He said today that Mar- jorie Young and Ronald Wood, who have jointly conducted the busi ness, will remain as employes. "The same hometown friendly at mosphere will continue," Gilley said. Confidence In Dunsmuir's poten tial as a shopping center promoted purchase of the store, Gilley ssiid. "We are planning on attracting shoppers to Dunsmuir," he stated, adding that he and Mrs. Gilley and their teen-age son and daughter will make Dunsmuir their home. Marjorie Young, a former city council member and the only wom an to serve in Dunsmuir in that capacity, has been active in Rail road Days work and Business and Professional Women's Club activi ties. She took over the store some years ago from her mother. Her father originally bought a furniture and funeral home business from A. A. Ward in 1921. The senior Young died in 1924. Ronald Wood, co-worker in the store, is his son in-law. Moose Lodge Installs Five MERRILL Fifty members of the Merrill Loyal Order of the Moose and Women of the Moose witnessed installation proceedings of recently elected officers during a regular meeting held Tuesday evening, June 24, at the Merrill Mnose Lodge Hall. The new senior regent is Betty To Brightman. She succeeds Ruby Tschirky who was installed to the office of junior graduate regent. Other newly elected or appointed officers are Pauline Bell, junior regent; Jeanne George, chaplain; Frances Brandenberg, recorder; Ada Matney, treasurer; Joan Gcstvang, guide; Verda Doshicr, assistant guide; Lucille Grey, sen tinel; and Marjorie Prince, argus. Perfect attendance pins were awarded to Rose Baley and Ruby Tschirky. Special prizes, "crying towels," were presented to Berna- dine Bibby and Betty Jo Bright man, each only missed one meet ing during the year. Following the installation cere mony, refreshments were served by the officers. The rioting between the Sinha lese majority and the Tamil min ority broke out in April alter the government made Sinhalese the of ficial language of the island over Tamil objection.
