At least il interest trends have anything to do with it they surely are. In the mail this week is a ques tionnaire Irom Bill Rae, editor of Outdoor Lite, one of the na tion's larger huntin' and fishin' periodicals. It contains the usual queries as to what, when and how you read previous issues, what you like and all that sort of run of the-mill stull But back on the second page are three loaded questions: HI "When hunting, fishing, Camping or boating do you some times wish you had a two-way radio to keep in touch with your family, business or other sports men, or to learn of emergencies at home or in your immediate porting area?" 12) "Would you like lo have a two-way radio with which you could contact people through a tie in with their own telephones?" Ml "If you would like two-way radio how much would you be will ing to pay for it? Up lo $1007 Up lo $200? Up to $300? Over pOH?" ' Response lo these questions could well mean the end of the great American outdoors if they are in the aflirmativc. They could spell the difference between the world of hunting and fishing as an indi vidual enterprise or a well regulated community enterprise. . Of course there is a certain per centage of the hunting and fishing (ratcrnily who will answer, and vigorously, in the affirmative. These are the part timers who stay close to the blacktop, never go out in rough water and spend more time around the hot sloves and dockside bars than they do in the open. They arc the timid of ,soul who will never know the taste of adventure nor the awesome tang of emergency. But I hope there will prove to be at least a militant minority. If not a majority, who would like to keep the woods and waters of the greater outdoors as a place of peace and conlenlment where re laxalion from the worries of this Weary old world can he at least temporarily achieved. Personally I can't imagine any thing worse than having a two way radio in camp. It would end the tranquillity forever if you were Instantly available at . all times. Imagine yourself hooked on lo a big one, the rod bending In exon erating arc, your reel singing and then the buir.cr on your two way, transistorized, pocket sized communications pack sounds and you interrupt the battle losing the fish in the process while your broker tells you that Amalgamated Everything has hit the skids and you are wiped out linnncially. Or your wife calls up lo remind you that today is Friday and on Saturday you promised lo lake hel lo Ihc opera and you hadn't for gotten, had you? All this despite Ihe fact that you am seven hun dred miles Irom home on an elk hunting trip in Ihe High linckies. The whole picture is pretty de pressing. And handy little two-way radio sets for sportsmen arc just the beginning. It would be only a short while until Ihc woods and streams of yore were turned inlo public parks idled with hot ring stands, poodles on leashes, maga line vendors, at fresco restaurants and peep show shooting galleries Trains, planes ami buses would run on regular schedule and spr cial ten day excursion trips would be cried on every side. And that statement isn't meant as disparagement of research de partments, either. Comes now National Hot Dog Month for July and figures re leased to newspapers say that per capita hot dog consumption has increased from 511.6 franks ir 1054 to an estimated 1958 consump tion of 62.4 hot dogs per person. Since our family buys ahout three pounds each month and every package contains 10 hot dogs, our per capita consumption 'counting the dogs who dearly love frankfurters, tool runs bet ter than five times the national average. Just to show you can prove any thing by figures, take a look at how many pickles were consumed, or at least purchased, in the Klam ath area during National Pickle Week earlier this year. Of course the "week" was 10 days in length and one must assume that every body was- out of pickles when the week started on May 22 and that they ale all they bought. Checking with salesmen for the companies who sell the most pick les here Nalley's, Heinz, Del Mon le and Lihby's and wilh Ole Roemhildt of Consolidated Freight ways which brought in Ihe biggest share of the pickle shipments, you come up with a figure of just ahout three pounds of pickles for every man, woman and child metropolitan Klamath Falls for Ihat week. Of course, that counts Ihe glass, but the jars have their uses, too. But, counting out the weight of the container, you still come up with the .startling fact Ihat every person in the area was averaging about ' 2.4 cucumber pickles a day during that week. Projecting those figures to make a national average by applying the percentage In the population of the United Stales, you'll come- up with an astounding number of pickles and the figure would make it ap pear mat the not dog people have merely scratched Ihc surface of consumer acceptance. Not having any desire lo he a statistic and picking one product we've never seen per capita con sumption figures on, it was inter esting' lo establish our family's per capita consumption on one fa vorite item. Not Ihat it means anything lo Ihc national average, hut .we consume about three pounds of gum drops every month. That f.'giii'cs just ahout one and one-hah fum drops apiece each day. Holler Coaster By LARRY ALLEN QUITO, Ecuador (API Ecua dor is celebrating the 50th anni versary of the "Andean roller coaster," a railroad that pro vides an exciting ride. The 287-mile line links this cap ital city, over 9,000 feet up in the towering Andes, with the hustling port of Guayaquil on the Pacific Its completion 50 years ago marked a turning point in the unification of this republic by opening a vast territory for the agricultural and industrial devel opment. It was the long dream of Eloy Alforo, Ecuador's president at the turn of the century. Two Virginians, the brothers Archer and John Harman, made (he dream come true after British financiers put up 17 million do! lars. Archer Harman was a fi nancier and his brother a military engineer. They had to construct much of the line in a zig-zag course, and build many tunnels and bridges to get around the Andean peaks ranging from 14,- (XX) to 26,0(10 feet. A few years ago, 36 hours were required lo make the trip, with frequent changes of powerful en gines and numerous switchbacks Improved equipment has cut the time lo II hours. Passenger trains leave Quito at 7 a.m., and arrive in Guayaquil at 6 p.m First .-.top is Latacunga. They themselves have made it indisputable that they are both blackmailers and second-raters. An East German spokesman said yesterday the nine American soldiers held captive 26 days since their helicopler wandered there would be released at once if the United States would recognize the Last German government. The United Stales, allied with West Germany, has refused to rec ognizc the East German Commu nist government as legitimate. The American position is that the East German Communists are not a government but the puppets ol the Russians. At a news conference set up by Ihe German Reds, the American captives yesterday told newsmen they accidentally landed in East Germany. The East German police first took them to Soviet army of ficials, not to East Germans. This action by the East German police was tacit admission that the Russians, not the East Ger man Communists, were the sov ereign power in East Germany. The East Germans have been pre lending they . are sovereign and should be recognized by us. After repeated requests the East Germans invited AP's Berlin cor respondent Seymour Topping, and eight newsmen who represent European Communist newspapers to a conference with the Ameri can prisoners. How the East German Red: came to do this in view of what developed and the position it put them in the eyes of the world- is almost unbelievable for Us stupidity and clumsiness. The Russians, afier the Amer ican prisoners were delivered to them by the East German police turned them back to the East Ger mans. Russia since has insisted the problem of releasing them in volved Ihe United States and the East Germans. This was an apparent effort lo force American recognition of Ihc East German regime. Dulles branded these tactics blackmail Tuesday at his news conference Dulles took this position: "I can't thiAk of anything Ihat .would be worse than, in effect, to pay blackmail to get people out. 'We are willing to use any prop er methods to get them out short of paying blackmail. If we started doing that, then that would only encourage further efforts to' use Americans a hostages." This country, allied wilh Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist government on Formosa, has refused lo rec ognize the Chinese Communist government on the miinland as the legitimate government of China. The Chinese Reds had held i Americans prisoners. Although this country did not recognize them, it nevertheless carried on long negotiations with the Chinese Heds to get the prisoners released. All but four are now free. This country will probably at tempt to follow the tame course in seeking the release of th nine American soldiers now in Fast Germany. Quo! The fact that the earth doesn't turn evenly on its axis has been known for some years. This makes some 24-hour periods longer or shorter than 24 hours.
