Oren Harris (D-Arki said today his subcommittee investigating the Sherman Adams case hasn't violated a House rule requiring secret sessions when a committee decides teslimony may defame anyone. Harris defended his subcommit tee's procedure against stiff eriti cism as he called back business' man lawyer John Fox for a third day of questioning under oath. Fox has pictured his business rival. Boston millionaire Bernard Goldfine, as getting favored treat ment from federal agencies through friendship with Sherman Adams, President Eisenhower's top aide. Adams has issued angry denials; so have Goldfine s lawyers. Goldfine flew In from Boston las', night but was reported plan ning to stay clear of today's hear ing. His lawyers said they wanted Goldfine to bone up on Fox's allegations so he will be ready for a scheduled appearance tomorrow Before leaving Boston, Goldfine told newsmen he would answer all questions put to him by investi gators "if my attorneys agree. 1 nave nothing to hide. At the outset of his testimony last week, Fox read a prepared statement charging pressures had forced collapse of the Boston Post, which he formerly published. But some of the things he said later off-the-cuff testimony caused the biggest slir and brought on criticism of the sub committee for not hearing Fox be hind closed doors. The group had rejected a reques. from Goldfine's lawyers that Fox be heard in secret. Among other things, Fox quoted Goldfine as saying he bought a Washington house for Adams, had given Adams checks in past years and that Adams had promised to take care of some Goldfine Violence On Cyprus Gains In Intensity NICOSIA, Cyprus (API Terror ist violence continued on Cyprus today and the leader of the Greek Cypriot underground threatened to renew attacks on the British un less they negotiate with Archbish op Makarios on independence for the island. An unidentified gunman in the southern port of Limassnl killed a Turk Cypriot as he bicycled to work at his barbershop in the Greek . quarter this morning. Masked terrorists in the western Famagusta district attacked a group of Greek Cypnols last night. The threat to open "the door ad mitting the god of war" was con tained in leaflets signed by Dig henis, underground name of FOKA leader Col. George Grivas. The leaflets said diplomacy would not longer be possible unless Brit ain confers wilh Makarios, the Greek Cypriot leader now in exile at Athens. EOKA's terror campaign has been directed at forcing out the British so the island can unite with Greece. The Turkish Cypriot minority opposes this for fear it will get second-class status. Nei ther side has shown much interest ' In Britain's plan for all three groups to share (he island's ad ministration. The terrorists attacked a group ol left-wingers near the village of Akhna alter they left a stormy town meeting during which the left and right tried to patch up their differences One left-winger was seriously wounded and nine others were beaten up. Violence also flared between Greek and Turkish Cypriote in the western Pahpos district after a Greek Cypriot butcher was found shot to death on a mountain road. Armed with sticks and home made weapons, the slain man's friends entered Greek village areas British troops stopped the rioting that followed by clamping on a curlew. The clashes injured two persons. troubles with the Federal Trade Commission. In teslimony, Adams has ack nowledged accepting hotel hospi tality and some gifts from Gold- fine. While conceding he acted imprudently in asking the FTC and Exchange Commission about cases involving (ioldhne, Adams denied exerting any influence on Goldfine s behalf. Both the White House and Adams denounced as lies much of what Fox told the subcommittee last week. Vice President Nixon defended Adams on the basis of the evi dence so far. But he said the de cision on Adams' future status at the' White House apparently will depend on the nature of further disclosures. In Chicago, Senate GOP Leader William F. Knowland (Calif.) again called for Adams resigna tion. Figures issued by the Pentagon at a reporter's request showed Goldline firms got about W'.i mil lion dollars worth of defense con tracts for textiles in 1951-52, the last two years of the Truman ad ministration. This was four times the total of comparable defense awards to Goldfine companies since Adams came to Washington with Lisen hower in 1953. The final Truman1 years saw heavy defense buying because of the Korean War. Harris was asked in an inter view about widespread protests that his subcommittee was allow ing itself to become a forum for smearing people. Hep. Thomas B. Curtis (It-Moi accused the subcommittee of "procedural impropriety." Pub lisher Robert B. Choate of the Boston Herald and Traveler, one of those named in Fox's testimony about alleged pressures on him, complained to Harris of what Choate called the subcommittee's "smear and run" methods. Harris contended the House rule requires a closed session if the committee determines that testi mony may tend to defame any person. He said the subcommittee in its previous conferences on whether to invoke the rule had decided, from the information before it. that the testimony would not re- "The committee hasn't violated quire putting the rule into effect. Ithe rule at all," Harris said. Don't Neglect Slipping FALSE TEETH Do fal tth drop. Blip or wobble when you tain, eat, laugh or eneeze? Don't b annoved and embarraaafd by ai'ch handlcapi.
