MONDAY. JUNE 23. 1958 . HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON PAGE THREE First Commercial Jet Airliner Due To Take To Skies About November 1 By CLAIRE COX United Press International NEW YORK (UPD-The great multi-billion-dnllar jet era, herald ed as the greatest transportatign development since the change from sail to steam, will begin with the roar of a giant vacuum clean er. A lumbering machine will roll down a New York Idlewild Inter rational Airport runway picking up rocks and .other particles that could gum up the works of a jet engine. Then a big swept-wing jet plane will suddenly sprint down the air strip, vault into the air and in 29 minutes be cruising at 29,000 leet over Nantucket Island. This will be Pan American World Airways jet Flight No. 1, leaving Idlewild at 11 p.m. e.s.t., ih or about Nov. 1, bound for Paris with 140 passengers and i'crew of 8. It will be the nation's first com mercial jet flight, ushering in an ege that has been in the making ince World War II, at a cost of Diuions to airlines, airports and local, state and federal govern ments. Pan American's tentative inaue- tiral flight plan calls for cruising atr altitudes ranging from 30,000 lo 40,000 feet at a speed of nearly 600 miles an hour. In a little more than seven hours, the passengers will be strolling on the Champs Jtiysees. .Other planes and other airlines will follow this single jet into the stiff competition for passengers. Finally, by 1961, a total of about 230 U.S. operated jet planes, cap able of carrying up to 150 passen gers each, and nearly 200 smaller prop jets will be plying the skies Foreign airlines will add heavily to the maze of frosty while jet trails streaking the world's skies What will this mean to John Q Traveler? It will slice his world in half, double his horizons, and at no extra cost at least, not un til the airlines have had a chance to determine the profit margins of jet operation.
